The best CPA exam tip I would give is to make sure you give yourself enough time to study and to be honest with yourself about how much you are actually studying. If you aren't honest with yourself and set clear goals and stick to them, passing is going to be horribly difficult – as someone who has sat about 10 times so far and still only has 1 part done because I keep letting myself get distracted by working around the clock, trust me on this one!

Skim read the notes and then solve as many multiple choice questions on STUDY SESSION (not PRACTICE EXAMS) as I can because whenever I make a mistake there will be explanations for it. I'm using GLEIM books and NINJA notes right now. I will take the CPA exam after I'm out of college.

Try to avoid studying anywhere you know you could be distracted.

If you can spare the time, take a break during the few weeks before the exam scores are released. This definitely helps me stay focused on what's important. Also, if you fail a section you can retake it before you start studying another section.

    Career tip:

Ask for feedback during job interviews! I would always do this right at the end of interviews (after my other questions) and would just ask something to the extent of “If I don't get this job, why would that be?” or sometimes just “what do I need to improve on to be successful?” It will give you very valuable feedback. Make sure the interviewer is comfortable being honest and tell them you want candid comments. It'll serve you well, plus the interviewer will likely see it as a positive that you want to improve and are open to critique.

Don't interview for a job doing tax in a CPA firm if you aren't prepared to work the 60+ hours they will need you during tax season. The dates vary a little between firms depending on their client base and work type but it's typically Jan 1st thru April 30th.

My tip – ask for friends and family to help. I've asked my wife to read note cards to me on occasion (in the car, etc.). She enjoys feeling involved in the process of my studying and it helps reaffirm how important this is.

Also, helping in the studying seems to help others realize passing the CPA ain't that easy!

    BEC: 79! (Nov 2013)
    FAR: 66 (Jan 2012), Rematch July 2014
    AUD: 61 (Jan 2014), 86 (May 2014)
    REG: TBD

There are three things I am doing this tax season:

    1. Working 7 am to 7 pm (this way I'll put in at least 60 hours not including weekends),

    2. From 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm I'll go to a local coffee shop and study for 2 hours,

    3. Before I head home I'll stop by the gym and work out for 30 mins, another 30 mins for the steam room/shower.

Then… I'll ptfo the second I get home. Depending on my laziness, I estimate that I pack my lunch/dinner 50% and eat out the other 50% of the time. Hope this helps if someone wants a routine! And sorry if this has been repeated 1000000 times already 🙂
