Find a place to study where you kind of look forward to going to, like the local coffee shop.

Study tip: read all the material first and then do the mcq, get someplace where you are out of distraction, do your own flash cards and take them to everyplace you go (even the bathroom).

I've took FAR in Jan. and got my butt handed to me. The greatest lessons I learned from my one take experience are:

    1. Do not underestimate the depth of understanding needed to successfully answer both conceptual and calculation exam questions. Practice the “harder” mcq's in your study review.

    2. Don't try to cherry pick the info. that YOU think is important and will be asked on the exam. It's prob. covered in our review material for a good reason. Don't make the mistake I did by thinking you can just skim through the more difficult material and be ok.

    3. Practice simulations before you take the exam. I spent way too much time trying to figure out how to navigate and manage my simulation screens. All this did was add to my anxiety.

This is a good site that offers a wealth of encouragement – especially for those of us who have failed a section(s).

Never give up, I have passed my first exam, failed 3 after, but still have a desire to be a CPA!

Career tip for those just starting out, from someone who was there a long time ago.

Yes you will get bored or have boring tasks in your first job, do them well though, just like requisite classes in college like English or Science, they still matter to your GPA, or in this case your professional reputation. “Pay your dues” so to speak and good things will come in time.

Exam tip: get up a little earlier and study first thing in the morning. On the weekend, study all day with gym in between.

I have an interesting career tip, when it comes to interviews remember that an interview is a two way street make sure to interview the interviewer also, ask many questions and not just the ones about the benefits. It's important to interview the person who's interviewing you because you don't want to get stuck in a position you don't desire. Also do lots of research about the company before entering that interview, if it's a well known company you could even find commonly asked interview questions conducted by that particular company so that you my be more prepared come interview time.

One study tip I have is to take breaks between studying so that you won't burn yourself out. You could try going to the gym, or exercising at home, reading your favorite novel or even watching a movie if you have the time of course. I prefer going to the gym because it helps me to release that pre-examination stress but if reading is your thing then you could try that because it helps to relax the mind and keep it sharp for exam day.

Best tip I can give is to never give up. After almost 10 years of taking parts numerous times, failing some, passing and then losing credit for others, most people would have given up by now. This past year I passed 3 parts not because I had more experience but because I believed I could pass them. With one part remaining and can see the light and know I'll get the job done. Also, on a smaller tip, I love working out and so to utilize my time more effectively, I downloaded a couple of apps to help study for the exam and studied while on the elliptical or bike. Definitely a great way to get extra studying in and not fall asleep reading some of the more “dry” topics.
