NEVER GIVE UP!! I know it's cliché but the feeling of inadequacy has been daunting from the time I began studying for the CPA exams on my birthday in July 2012 (what a terrible idea to sit in an 8 hour live review course on my birthday – and I also got locked out for about 20 mins after excusing myself to go to the restroom – terrible birthday!). The feeling of inadequacy only disappeared last week when I learned I passed exam #3 leaving me with only one remaining and four testing windows remaining before my first passing score expires in Oct 2014. I passed three previous sections, so I can definitely study and pass one exam in four tries or less.

I've gotten off topic so back to my point! The point of my advice is to never give up! The feelings of doom, certain failure, impossibility, not being smart of enough, blah, blah, blah, are natural but they're not true!! You've made it through all the education you have under your belt – you can do this! Failure of a section is ok. Almost all of us fail more than once. Just keep trying! You might run out of time and lose credit for a passing score – don't let it take away your dream! Just keep trying!

Life will throw you some road blocks. It will be very difficult to find time to study and to concentrate sometimes. Don't give up! Since my first passing score in April 2013 I've had to deal with alcoholism of a close family member sending them to rehab and a miscarriage after trying to get pregnant for 2.5 years. These are two of the most difficult trials I've endured in my 35 years of life. It's not easy to study when you're dealing with life's challenges but you just have to keep your head up and never give up!

If you never give up, you will definitely earn your CPA license and that's what your goal is, right? So just keep trying! 🙂

Thanks to Jeff for this website, these forums, the Ninja products, and the free Valentine's day giveaways!! This is the only CPA review product that offers a vibrant atmosphere for its students as well as “looky-loos”. You and your products and services stand alone. I wish I started getting involved with another71.com earlier on in my studies.

Jump in and learn the material. I'm starting my long road of studying after Feb close the second week in March. I've set my goals officially in my review at work. I'm going to take most of the advice and run with it. Good luck to everyone and thanks for sharing insight!

I have not passed any part of the CPA exam. I have taken few times and failed miserably. However I am not giving up. So what am I doing different this time? Glad you ask:

My best advice is having the positive mental attitude that I will pass it no matter what it takes. With that being said, I found out that listening to the lecture is not as useful as reading the material by oneself. After reading any particular chapter then do the corresponding MCQ. And very IMPORTANT part of MCQ is that to take notes from each MCQ, why you got the question right, why you got the question wrong. Look over those notes from MCQ over and over. Hopefully after doing enough MCQ, and taking notes from them, you will be able to conquer this monster called CPA.

As far as accounting career advice, I am going to share the an important advice my advisor provided me when I was in college. Always get involve with Accounting professional organization such as National Associaiton of Black Accountant (NABA). And no you don't have to be an African American decent to join this wonderful organization. I was fortunate enough to meet and network with some wonderful folks there and that help me land my job. Hope this helps. Good luck with your career and passing the CPA exam.

Out of School for X number of years? ‘(have been out of school for almost 10 years and earned my degree outside the US [Philippines to be specific])'

Have other commitments? ‘(Family, work, etc?)'

I work full-time, has a family and we have a 5-year old son.

Since I just took my first exam in January 2014 and luckily PASSED FAR on my first try with at least a 2-month preparation. I only have few tips which most if not all of you knew.

    1. Know yourself, your learning style. I used CPAExcel – hey it was cheap and it was free $$$ + Ninja Audio + Wiley Testbank (please note that I purchased the 10-point combo; have used the Audio and WTB only as a supplement to CPAExcel).

    2. Study Smarter – simply put in the time, then study, study and study. Because I work full-time, I only study for 30-45 minutes at lunch break and 2-3 hours at night time. I studied at least 4 hours every Saturdays and Sundays. Friday is my rest day. IF I feel like I was burnt out, I took a break for a day or two at any day of the week.

    3. Write, re-write/ re-type Notes

    4. MCQs – I did my MCQs after every section using CPAExcel. I used WTB within the final 2-week review.

JUST DO IT! Never Give Up! Keep Calm and Be Prepared.

Anything worth doing is probably not easy, but the rewards are worth it. (unknown)

If you fail an exam, don't study just enough for those last few points, study enough for 75 points since you never know what topics will be on your re-take.

My best tip for studying would be to maintain discipline in putting in 20 hours a week. The ninja ELL plan works great but you have to be adamant in not opening your email, Facebook, or web browser!

Also in your career, if your coworkers act like the sky is falling over a simple mistake that can be reversed with a simple journal entry, get out ASAP. There are great jobs out there with great accountants (coworkers) and life is to short to work with horrible people that stress you out. 🙂

    BEC - 64, 58, 68
    AUD - 55 - Retake 2013
    FAR - 55
    REG - JAN 2013
Ethics exam - required in my state (IL) DEC 2012

My main tip, which isn't feasible for all people, is to just take the max time off of work you can and do nothing but study for the time. When i took the time off work and really just treated my studying like my job, i had no problem passing AUD and FAR. I miss out on the vacation time later, but its totally worth it.
