Looking to start a tax practice, with no clientele yet. This will be on the side, and am looking to do this with as little cost / expense as possible.

Any recommendations on an easy-to-use, and inexpensive tax prep software? I may only file 5-10 returns this year.

Lacerte looks easy to use but really expensive. I’ve also seen some web-based programs, but no real knowledge on those.

Thoughts and advice are appreciated.

Do a quick forum search and you'll find similar threads. I think the consensus is that Drake is the most cost-effective, as you can “pay per return” up to so many returns. They have an unlimited option as well, but it doesn't sound like you'll need that quite yet.

I would recommend Tax Act which is very simple to use but is a great software. It only costs you ten dollars per return with no minimum.

CPA-Hopeful – for Tax Act , is it $10 per return, meaning 10 for federal and 10 for state? so minimum of $20

their site is a little confusing and doesn't go into the per return costs.

taxgeek – Drake looks pretty straight forward on pricing, so thank you. If I don't end up getting that many returns, I'd rather do a pay by return instead of $300 outright.
