Does an auditor need to be independent to perform an examination for prospective and pro forma FS? I’m thinking yes because engagements performed SSAE are for issuers and the Auditor needs to be independent when performing work for issuers. Am I way off here?

Pretty much anytime you see the word “examination” that should set your alarm off that they need to be independent for that particular engagement.

Have to be independent for ERAS:

    Examinations

    Reviews

    Agreed upon procedures

    Special reports

is what Roger uses and I like that acronym to get things straight.

Though If I recall, I think you are off base on the SSAE sentence if I am reading that correctly. SSAE are for attestation engagements for all other services.. so things like projections, forecasts, agreed upon procedures, etc.. so not issuers.

@xdesix. Ok great thanks for your reply. Ok so I know that SSARS applies to non issuers. Does SSAE apply to issuers? I think you already answered but just want to make sure. You set me straight on whether examination needs to be independent, so i'm good with that. I just want to see if I relate SSAE to issuers only.

nah, SSAE would fall in all other engagements not covered by SSARS, PCAOB, etc. So if you see a projection, forecast, or other type of those things that aren't exactly “issuers” and “non issuers”, you'll see in the report that they say “attestation standards established by the AICPA” .So basically proformas / forecasts / prospective = SSAE.
