Hello everyone, I’m a long-time lurker on the board and am in the process of getting my CPA. I have passed FAR and just took AUD last weekend (fingers crossed!). I’m hoping the wise people here can give me some much-needed advice.

My situation is this: I’m currently a tax intern at a regional public accounting firm in their smallest office. I was told in the interview that there was no room for me full-time here, but that there was a possibility of a full-time offer in our much larger main office. I’ve just graduated with 150 hours, so I have no desire to go back to grad school after this. I want a full-time job offer. However, there are 7 tax interns, of which at least 4-5 of us are ready to start full-time. They’re obviously not going to hire us all.

My dilemma: I’m the matron of honor in a wedding on 4/16 in Disney World. Meaning that, to get to the wedding, I would have to not work the 15th at the very least, maybe even the 14th as well. My internship ends on the 15th. Now, we all know how crazy busy season is. I haven’t brought this up to my manager/partner for obvious reasons. I’m really worried that I will look bad by bringing this up at all. But at the same time, I don’t want to miss the wedding (not to mention, she was my maid of honor in January and is my best friend).

My friend knows that there’s a possiblity I will not be there for most of the pre-wedding activities. I’m honestly worried I won’t be able to make it at all. So I guess my question is, would it hurt to bring this up to my bosses and just see what they say? I am willing to not go if it meant getting a full-time offer, but there is no guarantee of that happening even if I don’t go. Any advice would be great, I’ve been stressing about this hardcore for a while now.

If you think being in a wedding is expensive, wait until you get married.

Mine ran about $80,000 after the smoke settled. That's fairly standard for here in New Jersey.

@billbrasskey, I just got married in January, so I definitely know. Mine was nowhere near 80,000 thank God.

    Congratulations!

The weddings get pretty steep here in NJ. I've been to a few of them that were definitely well north of $100k.

My in laws are consultants on Wall Street so they were kind enough to foot the bill for us. Still, I got sticker shock even hearing about how much it cost.

@Lindsey_p87 – When I was an intern I definitely stressed when I had to ask for days off, so I can empathize. FWIW, I was one of the four interns out of six that they hired even though I took a few days/hours off while no one else did. As long as you are courteous and cognizant of the needs of the firm when you ask, I doubt it it affects hiring decisions.

Anyway, they won't not hire you just for asking, so you really should ask ASAP. I would offer to work overtime the days before.

This is a little off topic, but I feel compelled to mention: I hope that you are continuing to check your college recruiting boards during this process. There is still some activity going on for Fall 2015 hiring, at least at my school. You are absolutely within your rights to do this until you have a firm offer from them, especially since they've stated they don't have the capacity to hire all the interns.
