Hello everyone, I’m a long-time lurker on the board and am in the process of getting my CPA. I have passed FAR and just took AUD last weekend (fingers crossed!). I’m hoping the wise people here can give me some much-needed advice.

My situation is this: I’m currently a tax intern at a regional public accounting firm in their smallest office. I was told in the interview that there was no room for me full-time here, but that there was a possibility of a full-time offer in our much larger main office. I’ve just graduated with 150 hours, so I have no desire to go back to grad school after this. I want a full-time job offer. However, there are 7 tax interns, of which at least 4-5 of us are ready to start full-time. They’re obviously not going to hire us all.

My dilemma: I’m the matron of honor in a wedding on 4/16 in Disney World. Meaning that, to get to the wedding, I would have to not work the 15th at the very least, maybe even the 14th as well. My internship ends on the 15th. Now, we all know how crazy busy season is. I haven’t brought this up to my manager/partner for obvious reasons. I’m really worried that I will look bad by bringing this up at all. But at the same time, I don’t want to miss the wedding (not to mention, she was my maid of honor in January and is my best friend).

My friend knows that there’s a possiblity I will not be there for most of the pre-wedding activities. I’m honestly worried I won’t be able to make it at all. So I guess my question is, would it hurt to bring this up to my bosses and just see what they say? I am willing to not go if it meant getting a full-time offer, but there is no guarantee of that happening even if I don’t go. Any advice would be great, I’ve been stressing about this hardcore for a while now.

Our interns are usually gone by the first week of April since they wouldn't have enough to do anyway!

    AUD 84 (1/9/14-Wiley books/TB + free materials)
FAR 83 (5/21/14-the above + NINJA 10 Pt Combo Lite)
    REG 84 (7/9/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC/Notes)

lol @mamabear, I see how it could look like that. It is very costly, but I knew it would be going in. I just didn't anticipate spending more than $250 on a plane ticket, which is the average cost. But of course, Sam is right. I need to find a way to get there.

I did a tax internship back in the day and my last week was spent driving around town to run errands for the firm (like pay the electric bill, run to the bank, etc.) and reorganizing their filing room. Agreed with everyone else – talk to them about it now. Be professional and this shouldn't hurt your chances of a full time job.

@san4596, I'm hoping you're right and that it will not affect my opportunities here. I feel like parent's funeral is slightly different than a wedding, though. Maybe it's just me.

I'm glad the consensus is that this isn't a big deal. I hope that turns out to be the case for me.

OK. Then my advice stands–you'll regret it if you miss it and if you talk to them now it would be for the better and give you time to find a cheaper flight.

Go to the wedding. The job stuff will work itself out. But you don't want to miss your friend's wedding.

By the way, my sister got married in Disney World at the Boardwalk in October. Awesome. It was amazing. Don't miss it.

Given the significance of the event, and the fact that as a preparer, you should have your office cleared out by April 7-10 , you should be fine. As long as your desk is clean. It is the managers and admin who have the worst time on the final 2-3 days.

People only get married twice, you can always hit up the 2nd one.

    FAR- (2) 64, (5)74, (7)83 (Over achiever!)

Unless the firm does not have it's shiz together, there's no reason they will even have work for you the week before April 15th, except maybe scanning, shredding, blah. It slows down for the preparers around April 7th. The reviewers and partners are still hauling ass, but that's about it.

Last year April 16th – 30th, half my firm was gone on vacation. I sat as an associate with nothing to do since there were no managers to give me work. I enjoyed being able to study for the CPA actually.

We also have an intern who had planned a 2 week vacation end of February; she was up front about it with the firm and they OK'd it.

Have you actually tried to call the airline and change your flight or did you look up what a ticket would cost if you just tried to buy a new one??? Also many flights to Orlanfo that week in April are overbooked you could probably offer to be bumped later and they'd gladly do it for you. If you really like this place and want to stay after your internship I'd explore all options. It's different than a family funeral because the assumption WILL be made that you knew you had this commitment and kept it quiet to improve your chances at an offer, which will backfire. Even if you get an offer between now and then do you really want your employer to think you didn't give them a heads up that April 15, of ALL days just didn't work with your social calendar?

    FAR- 77

Do you live/work in a major city? If so – definitely GO to the wedding and dont think twice. It might seem like a job offer is #1 priority right now, but honestly, you're getting experience, which is great and once you have a little experience, most places will take a chance and hire you if you are personable, which it sounds like you are!

You would regret it forever if you miss any of the wedding activities! Some firms, no matter the size, may seem scary and hard to approach about things like this, but they might also be wicked laid back and know that by that point you wont have much to do – which is usually the case. The sooner you bring this up to whoever you need to talk to, the better.

My firm, about 100 professionals around Boston would be somewhat upset, but if they knew you were a great worker and wanted to hire you, they would still hire you and let you go when you needed to go (be it 4/15 or 4/12). They understand life happens… and the work will get done. So honestly, if they dont understand that, do you really want to work there anyway?

    Good luck!!

    FAR - 84.
    AUD - X,X,76.
    REG - X,X,75.
    BEC - X,X,74*, 81 AND IM DONE!!!!!!

*if i dont pass, i lose FAR.

Study materials: Becker videos/MCQ/Books, NINJA Blitz helped to finally pass AUD and REG.

First exam was in May 2013, seems like so long ago - FINALLY DONE!!!

@mla1169 I haven't bought a ticket yet. I'm waiting to find out what my plan is. Also, I had never planned on just not telling them and then leaving early. My options are to either tell them now and see what they say or not bring it up at all and just not go to the wedding (or fly out the night of the 15th). My OP was based on my hesitance to leave early at all during such a crazy time.

@Justkeepstudying The company's main office is in a major city, however I am working in a very small office in a small town about an hour away from the major office. I am the only intern here, which was part of my anxiety about leaving early. I am the only person preparing 1040's.

I live in Orlando, so I'll have my wife jump in and take over your matron of honor duties. She's a swell gal. 🙂

    A: 83
    R: 78 (expired), 77
