I'm in a wedding on April 16th – what to do??

Hello everyone, I’m a long-time lurker on the board and am in the process of getting my CPA. I have passed FAR and just took AUD last weekend (fingers crossed!). I’m hoping the wise people here can give me some much-needed advice.

My situation is this: I’m currently a tax intern at a regional public accounting firm in their smallest office. I was told in the interview that there was no room for me full-time here, but that there was a possibility of a full-time offer in our much larger main office. I’ve just graduated with 150 hours, so I have no desire to go back to grad school after this. I want a full-time job offer. However, there are 7 tax interns, of which at least 4-5 of us are ready to start full-time. They’re obviously not going to hire us all.

My dilemma: I’m the matron of honor in a wedding on 4/16 in Disney World. Meaning that, to get to the wedding, I would have to not work the 15th at the very least, maybe even the 14th as well. My internship ends on the 15th. Now, we all know how crazy busy season is. I haven’t brought this up to my manager/partner for obvious reasons. I’m really worried that I will look bad by bringing this up at all. But at the same time, I don’t want to miss the wedding (not to mention, she was my maid of honor in January and is my best friend).

My friend knows that there’s a possiblity I will not be there for most of the pre-wedding activities. I’m honestly worried I won’t be able to make it at all. So I guess my question is, would it hurt to bring this up to my bosses and just see what they say? I am willing to not go if it meant getting a full-time offer, but there is no guarantee of that happening even if I don’t go. Any advice would be great, I’ve been stressing about this hardcore for a while now.

I should also add, I did not know that I would be doing the tax internship when I accepted the Matron of Honor position.

I'd certainly ask and see what your options are. At our small firm the interns are usually sitting around doing nothing the last day or so since the “prep” part is pretty much done.

If they judge you based on one day, when you brought it to their attention, that seems pretty stupid to me. It isn't like the wedding day was decided by you or you are trying to get out of work. Any reasonable person would not hold it against you for talking to them about it.

I worked in public a few years and by the 14th/ 15th most of the work was done, especially on the intern/associate side. It is your best friend; don't miss the wedding. You should be in a good position to leave the 14th if not the 15th, and if they don't let you that is pretty unreasonable in my opinion. You also don't want to regret missing the wedding one day that is for sure.

The sooner you bring it up, the better. That is how I dealt with all my friends getting married (including myself) when I was in public. Let them know and get it on your calendar.

You should not even be asking this question, but should have told them in the beginning when accepted said internship. Your internship is over on April 15, so you leave at 5 to hop on a plane to Disney. Done.

Is it a big deal? Hell no! Go to your boss and discuss if it may be possible for you to leave early on April 15. Maybe you work some late nights and maybe you don't to get this done. Most of all, jobs come and go, but friends are forever.

Could it be a big deal? Yes! Say you don't tell anyone, and you are ready to jump on the plane after 5 on your last day of internship. Boss comes in and says “Hey, I need you to stay late to wrap up some stuff, and btw you are hired! See you in the morning!” You would either miss the wedding or have a black mark for not discussing with the boss sooner.

Thanks. I will definitely ask. I guess I just know that, in this competitive industry, one small thing like this can be the deciding factor between 2 people on otherwise equal ground. I have heard that the work load varies each year at this firm in terms of when it concludes. I talked to a guy that was recently hired on full time and he said that some years it's easygoing by that point, but last year he worked all the way up until the 15th.

But either way, I guess it can't hurt to ask?

As an intern…your work should be done by the 15th.

Remember….as an intern you are at the lower level of tax knowledge and the returns still have to be reviewed in order to go out.

At least with my firm…the lower levels of preparation start to run out of work a good couple of days before the due date. Depending on your relationship with your supervisor, I would discuss this with them. It is a lot better to discuss this NOW versus the week of.

Let them know ASAP. I'd also let them know that you've been putting this off because you were uncomfortable asking given the time of year.

DO THIS ASAP. It's a non-issue now, but will become one as you get closer and closer to April15.

The partner will understand. You don't want to work for them if they don't understand.

Honesty is ALWAYS the best policy.

I”m not sure that leaving after work on the 15th is even an option, which is why I was stressing about this. It is a plane ride away from where I live, and last time I checked there are no late night flights that aren't $500+, which I can't afford. But, I will let them know and see what they say.

Ok, so let's say they do “understand” and say it's fine. What does that mean in terms of my chances of getting hired on full-time? Like I said, I would not be working in this office, it would be the larger office where I trained for 1.5 weeks before starting here. I'm already at a disadvantage not actually working in that office.

Again, $500 for a plane ticket is worth making it to the wedding. So, talk to your boss about it and put the plane ticket on a CC. Pay it off over the next few months with the $ you will make from the internship.

If you miss the wedding, you will probably regret it. You should let them know ASAP.

@san4596, that would be easier to do if I hadn't already spent upwards of $800 on this wedding already. But I suppose if that's what I have to do, then I'll do it.

$800 already? Wow! Are you looking for a way to get out of the wedding to reduce the cost? I'm not judging if you are. That is costly.

A wedding is like one of those “Do Not Miss” moments in life. They are not going to make the decision based on you going to the wedding, as long as you handle it correctly with them.

Think about this, they are not going to base a hiring decision on the intern's decision to attend his parents funeral on April 10th, but will base the decision on the work ethic, communication skills, etc…
