Illinois CPE Question

I received my CPA license on 2-14-14 and it expires on 9-30-15. CPAs in IL renew their license every three years at the same time. My license was issued in the middle of the term so I have to renew on 9-30-15 with the others. At that time, I will be on the same cycle as the others and renew every three years.

My question: During the 3 year cycle, IL requires 120 CPE. How many will I need during the partial period for renewal in September 2015??

I’ve looked on ILBOA and IDFPR and I can’t find an answer to this question.

    Thanks for your help.

This is interesting. I had helped someone at work renew their Hawaii CPA license, and I remember seeing a pro rate schedule for the required CPE based on when they first got their license, so I thought I might find something similar for IL. But instead, I found this:

225 ILCS 450/16(d) “Licensed CPAs are exempt from the continuing professional education requirement for the first renewal period following the original issuance of the license.”

    https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilcs3.asp?ActID=1363&ChapterID=24

Plus the paragraph above that says the 120 hour requirement is for those “licensed under this Act for 3 years or more.”

I would want to call and double-check that, but that is one way around the problem.

    AUD 84 (1/9/14-Wiley books/TB + free materials)
FAR 83 (5/21/14-the above + NINJA 10 Pt Combo Lite)
    REG 84 (7/9/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC/Notes)
    BEC 76 (10/5/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC)

Baxter, for Indiana, I received a welcome packet that outlines the number of CPE required when you are issued a license in the middle of a renewal period. Based on your license date and renewal date, you would need 50 CPE hours in Indiana to stay active. I would imagine that Illinois is fairly similar, but you'll probably want to check with the board.

    Baxter,

From the ICPAS website: CPAs are exempt from CPE requirements for their first license renewal. This first renewal period of being free from CPE requirements runs from the time a license is issued until the next IDFPR 3-year cycled renewal. It can range anywhere from 3 years down to several months, depending on when in the IDFPR cycle the license is issued. The second renewal will require the full 120 hours of CPE.
