If your company is expecting you to have over 30 hours per week, when its slow, what do you guys do if just came back from vacation or have one scheduled soon, and its slow at work, and asked 3 other groups.

Feels risky to use 20+ hours week of non-client time, although good time to catch up on new rules/regulations, and network; anybody just use a few PTO time anyway, to make the Ratio non-client charge/totals hours worked better at least?

I think as long as you're putting effort into finding charge work and no one has any to give you, no one is going to hold it against you; at least that's been my motto since busy season.

Eat hours, be more thorough with documentation and analytical work, look for valid reasons to take longer on an assignment and milk it.

if you are in tax, and your not at least 40 hours chargeable in august there is either something seriously wrong with your firm, or something wrong with you such as the managers/partners don't want to give you work for whatever reasons.

If this holds true among all your peers where they are not busy, I would be concerned of layoffs b/c this firm has obviously too many employees for the work to go around.

Sept 15 and Oct 15 are right around the corner….

agreed with Shawn in VA. Some firms are experience grow and keep hiring but there is a point where too many employees will run inefficiencies. But in answer to your questions. You should offer your time to other managers. During non busy season, I sometimes pick up family office, or random basis schedules on investment for new clients, or audit responses, financial reports, etc. I would even send an email to few manager that you may feel comfortable the week prior and be like. I estimate that my current WIP for next week will be around 20 hours, is there anything I can help you with? If someone needs to go…. it better not be you 🙂 Good luck!
