As I get closer to the 150 hr requirement to sit, I been thinking about the CPA exam alot, like everyday. A part of me can’t wait to start studying for the exam later next year (mostly because I will get to re-learn all the accounting I learned in school that I have pretty much forgotten now). I kind of feel weird for being excited because I know how exhausting and difficult the CPA exam journey is and I know it will consume my life until I pass it. Is it normal to be excited about preparing for the CPA exam even though I know it will take over my life?

Honestly, when I was taking classes in community college I thought about the CPA exam all the time. I thought about how once I qualified, I could take the exam and then all my hard work would culminate in me passing, getting an awesome accounting job, etc. It would totally seem worth taking full-time units in evening and online classes and working full-time at a non-accounting job.

Then I started studying and I realized how horrible the exam was. And I'm still right in the middle of it. (Although I now have an accounting job!)

I understand the sentiment, but try to relax! Take it one step at a time πŸ™‚

    AUD - 7/5/13 - 93
    FAR - 8/24/13 - 91
    BEC - 11/30/13 - 92
    REG - 2/24/14 - 91! DONE!

I was kind of excited too, but I think the excitement stems from knowing that you are going to be part of an elite group of professionals and that you are really progressing in your career. I don't think you are actually excited for the studying, just the outcome, at least for me that was the case.

    BEC - 84, 4/6/13
    AUD - 77, 5/28/13
    REG - 83, 4/12/14
    FAR - 83, 10/3/13

    Ethics - 90% 4/24/13

    150 unit education requirement met!
    Work experience met!

@ calicpa. Yeah, that may be what it is. Excited for the outcome. And part of me wants to feel validated. I guess how the Bar Exam validates Lawyers, Medical Boards validates Doctors, etc..

    Hello Everyone,

It's nice to be a member of this forum. I am here because I need all your help. :-(. I wanted to share a bit of information about me. I earned my bachelor's degree in the Philippines way back in Oct. 2005. I moved here in the US in mid-2008. I have a family with a 5-year old son. I am currently working for a school district (more than 2 years) as an accountant in South Carolina.

It has been one of my goals to be a US CPA. I chose and applied to sit for the exam in CA since we are planning to move back there in future. Other reason is that CA would accept a general accounting experience from private industry. I finally got my authorization to test from CA Board of Accountancy more than a week ago. I have selected FAR and AUD sections first. I plan to sit for FAR in January 8ish, 2014. I have not finally decided to purchase my review courses and materials yet as a lot of things are going on in our family like moving to our new place by the first week of October 2013. I want to get settled first before getting started – just me.

I have a Wiley CPA Exam Review book or FAR but it literally puts me to sleep and found it so overwhelming. I needed a review course/materials that is not only bite-sized but is also comprehensive and really help me prepare to fight this trek. (I don't need a bite-size that might not help me prepare, πŸ™ ).

My plan is to purchase CPA Excel Self – Study (Core Study Materials + 1 free videos of your choice and I like the videos I will just upgrade for the next sections) + Ten Points Combo (Wiley Test Bank and Ninja Notes plus free Audios, etc). Main reason I am not choosing BECKER is the price.

I have been reading different reviews and there's really no telling for me which one should I get. I know it's only me who can decide but do you think CPA Excel + Ten Points Combo are enough resources to help me prepare? I am planning to start studying mid October. Do you think a 10-week is good enough as my preparation time knowing I have been out of school for 8 years?

    Any thoughts are appreciated.

Anything worth doing is probably not easy, but the rewards are worth it. (unknown)

I'm sure it's been noted before but there are a lot of options and help out there for Becker. First, a lot of employers will help if not reimburse you completely for the Becker (doesn't sound like your situation). My company did not offer any assistance or tuition reimbursement, but I applied for scholarships through my local AICPA chapter and also one through Becker itself. They each awarded a half scholarship, meaning I didn't pay a dime for it. It's been great for me and I would recommend it to anyone able to get their hands on it. Looking back, if I wasn't able to afford it, I would probably look for second hand copies on the internet.

    FAR - 84
    BEC - 89
    AUD - 93
    REG - 87

@JTS254 – Thank you. I would love to get Becker, just couldn't afford it now. One of our auditors who is currently sitting for the exam is using Becker and Ninja Notes. He has passed 2 sections (first attempt).

e_griffin87 – As the others have said, enjoy your life until next summer. Starting the CPA journey is very exciting (otherwise, none of us would do it.) Good luck to you!

CPAExamTrekker – Consider what JTS254 mentioned about scholarships for Becker. It really is a good set and they offer financing if none of the scholarships work out.
