Anyone else studying on the down low so co-workers (who are also testing) and friends won’t bug you about your score if you unfortunately fail? I’m taking the last of my first round of exams Dec 5. I’m waiting for my reg score which should come out on the 22nd and I passed audit but failed FAR. As far as anyone else knows…..I’ve only taken far and studying for BEC now hahaha

everyone at work knows i'm taking it, all the partners, managers, fellow staff lol I mean it was one of my talking points in my interview to show initiative and commitment, nor much way around it. It actually can be a great motivator when everyone knows.

I've tried explaining that over half of the people that attempt these exams don't pass it, but I know still don't get it.
Unfortunately, my family aren't the most understanding of people. I know that one day they'll get angry at me for something and throw it in my face that I didn't pass these exams the first time. They have done this to other people.
Specifically, they make snide comments about an aunt that had to take the real estate test many times, which happened over a dozen years ago. Therefore I know I'll be hearing about this for a long time.

When they ask me or talk about their scores I lie right to their faces — “Oh maybe I'll take it one day” or “No, you guys know I'm a loser.” I have one confidant manager and one partner who knows, but no one else. Some of them are studying and some are not but, I just don't want it to be their business, and include me in their talks and comparisons. Not to be mean but, in a sense I'm in direct competition with these people. It's a small firm.
So far I'm halfway done. When I get my license one of the firm partners will make an announcement at staff meeting and there will be serious shock value. Hopefully in February.

November 15, 2013 at 4:15 pm #470747AnonymousInactiveTelling people I am studying is the worse decision I ever made. I'm waiting for the score on my last exam and the pressure is immense. My parents and in-laws have at least a little courtesy. They never ask me directly and tend go through my husband. He says he has been contacted almost everyday from someone asking about my results.
But honestly, I don't know how you could do it on the down low. Taking a days off from work and turning down most social events is a pretty big indicator. The week before an exam I usually become even more of a hermit and don't see anyone at all and disconnect almost completely from my phone.

November 15, 2013 at 4:22 pm #470749AnonymousInactive@ blue girl – You are exactly right – it is very difficult to keep on the downlow….especically if you are someone who is working and needs to take the exam over a year long timeframe. There are only so many times you can turn down social events before people start asking – and if you want to study at work on your lunch breaks, eventually folks will catch on.

November 15, 2013 at 4:48 pm #470751psullyiiParticipantThere are a lot of us at my firm who are in the process of taking them, and we have to document our progress. The hardest part is when two people are waiting for a score on the same day. Hard to celebrate unless both people passed.

I know of someone who was a partner that actually fired someone because they lied to them about the exam. This partner has since gotten out of public accounting and is now a professor at a local university. This was a fresh graduate that was on maybe 6 months, and said that they had not started studying for the exam. However, they had sat for the exam (all 4 parts), and were waiting on their score. They passed the first try, and celebrated telling everyone. Only to be fired for a little white lie.
I'm just saying this because their are some people out there like this, and they see a lie as a lie no matter what it is about.

If the supervisor or person in charge ask, certainly tell the truth. I certainly won't lie if I failed, but….I sure don't like admitting to failure. No one wants to lose the respect of family, peers, or co-workers.
I get annoyed because in general I put out that I was taking the exam not knowing or considering that everyone I told plus everyone they told will ask me did I pass. I feel so sad to say no I haven't passed yet and the reply is ” It can't be that hard”. With that said, I wish I had not told anyone, but then again where would the challenge come from to pass. What a two edge sword…..
