It is difficult to find a job especially , international student.Illinois require one year experience which i don’t have. I am now studying REG for the last section and considering to gain experience at H&R block ( even without paying) . Is this a good idea? How should i reach them?

Go to their website. They have a free test you can take that will tell them if you need to attend their tax classes or if you get above an 85 you are almost guaranteed an offer. Do the test before you take reg, the tax questions can be good practice (I took the exam 6 days before I took REG). Its open book and you get an obscene amount of time to finish it.

Now, they start EVERYONE at minimum wage but you said you're in this for experience and not the money.

I'm looking for tax experience (I've been an accountant for a long long time) and going to volunteer with VITA this upcoming season to help prepare returns for low income families as a volunteer. Always nice to be able to do good for someone else while gaining experience.

Check with your state board about what exactly the experience has to be. Usually you need a full 12 months and block is usually seasonal so you'd need something else for 6-8 months. Sometimes it specifically has to be in attest. Also make sure the block office you'd be working for has a CPA who would be willing to sign off on experience if it was to count.

Hi, I am also an Illinois CPA candidate. Keep in mind that your work experience must be signed off by a CPA. Just keep that in mind before you take the job. If there is no CPA's at the H&R block you are going to have a hard time getting your experience signed off on, unless you can find one that will vouch for you.

    Good old VITA.

Where you get yelled at by old people for doing their taxes “wrong”. Don't miss that.

    BEC: 93 4/18/13
    FAR: 89 7/3/13
    REG: 90 8/30/13

    DONE!

You can also check out other McTax places….I work at one under a CPA year-round. While each franchise is supposed to be the same they are not….Look into what they do at their offices…you won't get the experience worhty of a CPA that only has clients looking for EITC.

I don't think they “guarantee” a job if you score above an 85 but I've never heard of someone passing and not at least getting an offer. It would be very unusual to get a full time job there though, I think the bulk of the employees there are only part time?

Oh good Weston, I get yelled at by an old guy on a daily basis at work….so I should feel right at home there! LOL!
