How to answer why did you study tax instead of audit?

Would you put your GPA if you have five years experience on your resume and the cpa license?

Are most campus recruiting mostly entry level?

I would assume you took classes in both tax and auditing – is that wrong? Or do you mean you have a Master's in Tax but are now pursuing a job in Auditing? Regardless of the situation, the way to answer the question is whatever is the truth – maybe a selective part of the truth, but the truth nonetheless. Why are you pursuing auditing now? It could be something like “I enjoyed my entry-level tax course, so signed up for more courses related to taxation, but have found that in the real work world, I prefer to do auditing work because ______” and fill in the blank with things that are positive and encourage the idea that you'd be a great auditor.

Personally, I wouldn't put the GPA on the resume if you have experience, and especially if you have the CPA license too. For that matter, I wouldn't put the CPA scores, either. GPA, CPA scores, etc. all give the feeling that you're new to the accounting world and feel like the best thing you can contribute is an academic record. However, highlighting the experience and just briefly including the education and CPA credential both give the impression that you have real-world experience that makes you valuable to them, as well as having the academic record that makes you hireable.

Now, the GPA part may change if you're applying for Big 4 and/or through campus recruiting. From what I've gathered reading posts here, Big 4 is very interested in GPA especially if it's through campus recruiting. I've never been to campus recruiting and never had any interest in the Big 4, so I can't give you much information for those matters.

If it's for an entry level position through campus recruiting, then Yes. If it's for a regular position where you're an experience hire, then maybe. If your experience is weak, then GPA of 3.8 or better will help. If your experience is strong (e.g. public accounting, big 4, etc.) then it's worthless.
