How superstitious are you?

I scheduled FAR yesterday for 10/17. That would have been my great-grandmothers 117th birthday and exactly one month before my birthday. I checked yesterday morning and saw there were no tests available at my usual testing center. I figured I’d take it in Houston but I waited to talk to my husband. I thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea for him and son go to with me and we’d spend the next few days in Houston taking a little vacation. He didn’t think he could take off work so, I looked last night and there was a test available at the closest testing center so I went ahead and scheduled. I didn’t notice, until I got my confirmation from Prometric, that the testing center I’ve been going to, #5140, is now in a different location and it’s now testing center #1313. Normally, I don’t think twice about the number 13 because both of my son’s were born on Friday the 13th. But when I saw 1313 on 10/17, I started to get a little tingly. Maybe I’m just seeing patterns in numbers more because I’ve done nothing but study for years, but I’m not sure if the stars are aligning in my favor or to conspire against me. Who knows! I know that I will definitely purchase those red underwear for this test!

I'm not particularly superstitious, but I have a couple habits that could be classified that way. When I did theatre I had certain clothes I would wear for the entire run of the show. One play it was the same pair of argyle socks under my boots. Another time it was the same camisole beneath my costumes. I always do the same breathing rhythm before stepping on stage. When I took the CPA exams I wore the same shirt each time. An orange one that reads, “sleep is overrated.” I'm sure whoever sees those pictures they take at the testing center will think I'm a crazy. But it's totally my lucky tshirt now. That said, I don't think it actually had anything to do with me passing except perhaps easing some part of my mind. I wouldn't think anything about the numbers, but you do need your mind to be as settled as possible going into the exam.

I don't consider myself to be superstitious, but I'm pretty sure I wore the same shirt for all my tests (last 3 at least.) Mostly because it was comfy! And I think it is special that I took my final exam on my dad's birthday. He died a few years ago, but birthdays are still special memory days. Two of my sons have “13th” birthdays. One was Friday, 13th. So, Kricket, my prediction is that great things are in store for you at center #1313 on your great-grandmother's birthday! We're all pulling for you!

If I am unpreprared for the exam – I am SUPER – superstitious.

And if I am prepared – I am not 😛

I tend to lean more on prayer than superstition but I do try to be consistent in my approach to the test right down to rewarding myself with a nice crab leg dinner (wife's alergic but loves them so it's a great reason to eat alone). I find that being repeatable helps take out some of the worry. Repeat the process, hopefully repeat the results.

But I do wear my favorite pair of drawers though. Not because I'm superstitious but they are the most comfortable.

I am SO superstitious. I buy lotto tickets the day before exams. I figure its worth a shot to play luck either way 🙂 I went to HH with a girlfriend after I took BEC. It was my second exam (failed REG, my first). I checked my ticket at the bar and won $44.80. My friend said, “Who wins such a weird amount, why not $45?”. We joked and decided I either would score an 80 or a 44. Low an behold, I scored 80. My boss makes fun of my thing with numbers, but I have to try to still enjoy something about them after this torturous experience. 13 is also a special number for me Kricket ~ this will be it for you!!!

    REG 72, 86 and DONE!!!
    BEC 80 🙂
    FAR 72, 78 🙂
    AUD 73, 76 🙂

I've been going to the same testing center for each exam, my last 2 exam I even sat at the same computer. I would be lying if I didn't say I was nervous for my last test because circumstance has made me choose a different test location. I will be bringing a change of clothes to work so I can be comfortable during the exam 🙂

    REG - 5/21/2012 - 85
    FAR - 7/24/2012 - 86
    BEC - 8/27/2012 - 85
    AUD - 10/5/2012 - 72....rematch 1/3/13 (waiting)

I'm not very superstitious outside of this exam but there are some things I've done consistently throughout this exam process.

I always take my exams in the afternoon and I always eat some sort of comfort food before hand.

When choosing a locker at the testing center I alway opt for the 4 or the 8 if available. My birthday is April 8th. And if not the 4 or 8 any other EVEN number will do. I also prefer even numbered computers. If I'm assigned an odd, number, I kindly ask if I can be seated at a different computer =)

Kricket, have no worries, the stars are aligning for you!!!

I am so superstitious it's absurd. When I originally had my exams scheduled, they were all scheduled on Saturdays at 12:00 or 12:30 p.m. The dates were 11/26/11, 1/14/12, 5/26/12, and 7/14/12. When I had to reschedule my May date to August 31 (a Friday) due to a job change, I thought I was for sure failing. I also wore yoga pants and a comfy t-shirt to my first two exams and got the same score on each of them. Then for the July date I figured I already screwed everything up for myself since I rescheduled one and decided to actually do my hair and dress like a normal person. I scored much higher, so I dressed like a normal person again on my last exam and scored high again.

I have this issue because when I was in figure skating, my team was ridiculous. We would go through the same routine before each skate. We would have certain specific items in the locker room with us (ketchup bottle, certain stuffed animals, and so on), listen to certain songs, do certain cheers, get a “fall” out, say the Hail Mary, etc. And then if we'd have a bad skate, we'd realize it's because we had forgotten something from our normal routine.

I think it's perfectly healthy to be superstitious and it sounds like everything will be on your side on exam day! Good luck!!!

For AUD, BEC and REG I tested at the same center and passed. For FAR I scheduled my last two attempts at a different location and have gotten the same score. I decided that I will only book at my orginial center. The second is not as nice and the prometric workers are nincompoops. No reason to take an hour to check people in and no need to sit the 5th person to show up 5th from last instead of in the order as which they arrived.

i'm not very superstitious but i've developed some during the years

    1) it's bad luck to tell co-workers when i'm taking an exam

    2) during score release, right before i hit F5 i get my fist ready and do a fist pump when i see a passing score. worked for AUD and BEC but didn't work for REG so i stopped doing it

    3) during score release, i usually take the stairs down at work and always have to take the first step with the right foot. did it for REG and still failed so i stopped doing it

    4) it's good luck to check scores with my phone instead of the computer. worked for REG but didn't work this time for FAR so i'm not doing it anymore

    5) after an exam, i take all my notes and books and put them in a pile next to my table, assuming i passed and don't have to look at them anymore. didn't work for REG so i stopped doing it

    i'm weird!

    REG-65,71,74,73,70,74,79
    BEC-60's,60's,69,71,76*,78
    FAR-67,66,65,79
    AUD-54,60's,65,83*,69,80

@nolifecpa, you're not weird! Lol. I just wanted to tell you that I did the exact same things with my books. When I got back from the exam I'd put everything back in the bottom of the box they came in, assuming I'd never have to look at them again.
