I was just wondering how many tax returns do you do during tax season (until April 15)? Is it mostly 1040 or 1120?

This is my second tax season, and I wish I could do more. I was wondering how many returns do other people do. This year so far I have done about 120 returns, 95% 1040 and 5% 1120. Beside taxes I m also working on compilations for several clients every month. And also, I didnt work much overtime, only about 15hrs total.

How many returns you do at my firm, doesn't matter. It's how many billable hours you do. In March I had 235 billable hours, and worked 260 hours total. I had managers and senior managers working 290-300 billable hours. Yikes!

but what I really want to do is complain about how long I have to work and why even after cpa exam I feel like nothing changed. meaning, I still don't have a life 6months out of the year.

My boss asked me how many hours I can work, and since I am studying for the CPA exam, I told him I could work 1 extra hour every day Mo- Fr, instead of coming to work on Saturday. My boss is really understanding. I m planning to work more hours during next tax season once I m done with the CPA exam.

@Jennifer241, if I look at billable hours, most of my worked hours Feb-March has been billable as well. I dont think that would be different with anyone else during tax season. However, someone can spend 3-4 hours on a tax return that can be done in 2hrs, just because they are slow. I m not referring to anyone, this is just an example. That's why i asked about the number of tax returns.

I forgot to mention in my question above, that I m talking only about preparing returns, not the number of returns prepared and reviewed.

I think that it's hard to find any solid method to compare. I'm with OneStep that some people take way too long to prepare returns. I worked with a kid that literally could have gotten an entire billable hour of a simple W-2 return. Me, if all they had was a W-2, it'd take about 20 minutes counting time printing, talking to the client, and answering the phone throughout the whole return! At the same time, by simple return-count, a complex corporation wouldn't count for more than the W-2 only return. So it's hard to compare.

However, when I worked in taxes, my boss and I did about 400 returns before April 15th, include a few corporations, several LLCs, and a couple trusts or estates thrown in. We didn't track it separately, but I'd say it was pretty even split between us, so around 200 each.
