MemberWell, understand something, while it might not be true in 100% of the cases, MOST of the time the amount of money you earn is tied to the VALUE you produce in society. Being a CPA isn't just about money, the amount of money you make is tied to your “reach” as a CPA in the first place. But in general, CPAs as a group are the foundation of business, and business is the foundation of our country as without business there are no taxes and without taxes there is no defense, and without defense, there's no country.
CPAs are the backbone of business in that:
– Most of the business start-ups are created with the assistance of CPAs
– Just about all existing successful businesses are maintained by CPAs
– CPAs provide holistic consulting and work in terms of internal management accounting so that the business mission, vision, operations, etc. is created and operated in the most efficient way possible.
– CPAs provide holistic consulting and work in terms of external financial accounting so the business can raise equity or debt financing and decrease the amount they send to tax authorities which increases the profitability of the company that allows for continued growth.
– CPAs help protect future investors by auditing previous investment scams to identify how, where, why and when the scams occurred so that new regulations and procedures can be created to avoid them in the future.
As a GROUP, CPAs are the foundation of every single group of industries in this country. If you take away CPAs as a GROUP…..you have taken away Business in general.

InactiveI hope this link works for everyone, but this is a prime example of how CPA's help the world. The article is about a school superintendent that has been playing fast and loose with taxpayer money and got caught! My hat is off to the Legislative Auditors office for protecting the public.

ParticipantVery few people have jobs where they can see an impact on their community. So it's really about what you're able to do outside of working hours. If you're lucky enough to work for a firm that offers flex or comp time, you may find yourself with a day a week during the summer to participate in direct outreach programs. I am very active in my daughters activities-providing bookkeeping services to gilt scouts and our cheer league. I did volunteer bookkeeping services for a non profit that teaches marketable skills to homeless and disabled people in my state. I'm able to take some time off in the fall to help plan and execute a Thanksgiving dinner that last year fed 1800 people. I coach young girls in cheer and enjoy watching their self esteem and relationship skills grow.
To me, my job keeps a roof over our heads and food on the table so we can spend the rest of our time making a difference in our community.

Membertoo many times we think of the CPA with tunnel vision. Lots of CPAs won't become CFOs, won't become managers, won't become CEOs etc…they won't. Accounting in general you have a lot of knowledge, it's the language of business. Who gives the most to charities? Businesses. Accounting and the CPA is very much about what you know and who you know, the more skills you develop in an area the more your OPINION will be asked.
Currently i'm applying to sit on the financial committee or a non for profit. They're looking for people who are skilled in particular areas. It depends on your area, my city has lots of not for profits, but there are also smaller ones who can't afford an accountant. You could go there once a week and do their bookkeeping. It could always pay off, new NFPs may not have all the funding in the world, but one year they may get X amount of money from the government and have a spotlight. You never know what that could grow into. I know one NFP i did bookkeeping for in undergrad couldn't afford a member of their staff over 25 hrs per week, a hole in a wall, i was grossed out to even sit in the chair sometimes. The summer before i started my last year of undergrad they received over 500k from the state which is amazing for them. Stick with things. Stop thinking in a bubble. Stop thinking of the reward it can give you right now, things need time to grow. No one can create a plan for yourself, if you don't have one, there's no way the CPA will ever help you change the world. The CPA is about trust, that people can trust your opinion on certain matters, and that opens doors

InactiveCPA's help the world by studying for the CPA exam. By studying for the exam you are not out and about driving to who knows where having 99999 times more fun then studying. Therefore you are doing your part to reduce the carbon footprint. By that this stops global warming and the glaciers dont melt and everyone die.

ParticipantThe article focuses mainly on the “for-profit vs. not-for-profit” employment discussion, but I think the underlying point is highly relevant to this thread. Enjoy. 🙂

MemberWhile I was taking my Masters of Science in Accounting there was a poster on the wall that always caught my eye. Some dude had gotten his CPA, then traveled to South America and was helping people in/around the Amazon in any way he could financially/accounting related. Honestly I didn't look into it further and have no idea what he actually did, but it was a cool idea and I won't forget it.

InactiveYou should look up VITA (volunteer income tax assistance). It's a progran that have volunteers prepare tax for people whose AGI is under a certain dollar amount. I have volunteered with this organization numerous of times, and quite enjoyed it.
Also you can hold programs and classes that teach financial literacy to under privledged areas and people who have falling prey to predatory lending and other things. Honestly the entire reason why I started studying accounting is because I wanted to help other, and teach financial literacy.

MemberI know my school has a VITA program where students volunteer their time with tax returns. It is a great way to get some experience under your belt while at the same time helping those in need.
