tomq04ParticipantHow do you guys have your home offices set up? I’m trying to get ideas before I remodel my shed to be a man cave office.
That was embarrassing, first time forgetting a forum in many moons.

AnonymousInactiveYou can't edit it to fix the category? Lame!
And mine is simple: A $70-ish desk from Big Lots that has some shelves on the side; top one has my printer on it. On the other side, I have a two-drawer filing cabinet. Best part about it is dual monitors. 🙂 I'd like to get a bigger desk someday, cause my two monitors barely fit, no desk space left around them; however, for now, it does what has to be done.

AnonymousInactiveJust bought a house in SF and the bottom room behind our garage, we have a ~350 sq ft den dubbed the “man cave.” The man cave has a bathroom as well as an entrance into our backyard.
I have a big oak desk and filing cabinet I bought from Scandinavian designs which cost ~$350 in total. The desk is huge and kinda looks ridiculous with my 13 inch Macbook pro on it with no external monitors. But at the moment, it's littered with my note books, flashcards and becker books.
I have an L-shapped sectional with a 60 inch Samsung TV with both PS4 and Wii U with a long entertainment center that fits right between 2 windows that face our back yard. I also have a few Star Wars Legos (X-wing, Tie-fighter, AT-AT, A-wing, Snowspeeder, if you're wondering) scattered around the railing that lines the man-cave as well as nerf guns for when the fiancee's little cousins come over.
I'm going to frame and hang my CPA certificate when I get it.. Still need to fill out the walls because they're really bare, but first things first.. Passing REG!

taxgeek83ParticipantI just bought a glass top L-shaped desk for my <small!> home office and it's perfect. Fits the laptop, another monitor (though I think I'll get a larger one, still plenty of room) and still plenty of room to spread out whatever work I have going on. And it looks pretty classy! It was just under $180 from Amazon, with free shipping. If you have to pay shipping, I think it's another $30 or something.
Other than that, I have a five-shelf bookcase that is full, a filing cabinet, and a futon for guests. Not a lot of room to move around, but eventually I'll have a bigger place and can separate the office & guest room. 🙂

AnonymousInactive@taxgeek care to link the one you got? My boyfriend's desk needs to be replaced and he likes glass-top.

AnonymousInactiveDual screen yes; Mac no. 😉 I'd like to get a desk big enough for triple monitor someday…

jeffKeymasterLook for local furniture stores to have their annual warehouse sales…stuff they aren't selling or slightly blemished merchandise. I got a $1,000+ dining room table for $120 that I use as my home desk (pictured).
I didn't like Mac either – until I used one 🙂

AnonymousInactiveI've used Mac several times – owned one at one point…within 3 hours of owning it, it blue-screened. I was working in the tech department at school at the time, showed it to the Mac-fans there, and they were like “No way – you can't blue-screen a Mac”. 8 hours later, they admitted it was blue-screened, and gave it back to me after doing a complete harddrive wipe and fresh install. I sold it, and it worked wonderfully for my brother for years…but I haven't dared invest in one since. Not so much about me not liking them as them not liking me. 😛

Don't let the reviews scare you – two friends and I put it together in an hour or so, and there was a bottle of wine or two in there somewhere as well. 😉 I left the keyboard pull out off because I work off of a laptop, but it didn't look like it would be too complicated to get on there.

AnonymousInactiveI was staunchly anti-mac, but my windows laptop died after 2.5 years and I didn't want windows 8 – it's just a terrible OS. So I gave in and bought a macbook pro. I don't regret the decision and wish I made the switch sooner. I've had it for almost a year now and it has never crashed on me. I even did some heavy gaming at one point with it (3 months of Diablo 3).
Mac OS is just stable and a lot more consistent than windows. The only bad part is that Excel looks and feels terrible on it. Although, I'm not using excel outside my work PC anyway, so I can live with it.

AnonymousInactiveThanks taxgeek! Always like to know someone that actually got it and it didn't fall apart on Day 1.
February 19, 2015 at 7:53 pm #647711
taxgeek83ParticipantHaha nope – so far so good! I haven't had it for very long, but other folks say it has held up really well – going so far as to putting a TV on there. The one I have sits pretty solidly put together, so I'm not too worried about it. No “wiggling” or anything like that. A laptop and a couple of monitors should be no problem at all.

StephAVMemberI work at the kitchen table most of the time… This makes me want a bigger house. And Club 300 you bought a house in SF and have money left over to have an awesome mancave / office!? Amazing!

tomq04ParticipantI love windows 8! There I said it, the touch tablet running the full version are great (Asus Transformer for <$300). Short of being called a fanboy, Windows 10 looks pretty stinking awesome too.
I did use mac's all through college and I really enjoy OSX, particularly since everything just “works”; but anyone knocking Windows 8 without running a little functional tablet is missing out.
