I am curious to see if others around here feel like they have experienced or noticed any difference in how people interact with you now that you have your CPA.

Since obtaining my CPA, it feels like more interviewers treats me with more respect or assume that I am knowledgeable whereas before, it felt like more interviewers were kind of testing me to ascertain my knowledge and whether I actually know my stuff or am full of it.

In my regular day-to-day life at work nothing has changed really though.

Has anyone else had any similar experience, or is it all in my head?

Not a CPA yet, but people do see me differently though. They see me as very pale and sunlight seem to affect me negatively as though I am a Vampire with a thirst for Caffeine. It's probably because I'm in Starbucks so often studying often. As soon as the Sunlight hits me I hiss and hides in the shadows.

Since studying for the CPA exam, I've developed horrible anxiety attacks. I went to my doctor to explain what was going on, and what was causing them, and immediately got a Xanax prescription. I thought people had to jump through lots of hoops for one of those but as soon as I uttered “CPA Exam” she immediately put me in the “not an abuser” category and was ready to help.

Our CPA Firm treats those who pass much more favorable and with more respect than those who have not passed.

When I passed, it was like a new door to an all new club was suddenly opened up for me.

Most of my clients assume I am a CPA already (before I had passed).

Hahahaha! Skynet, yes. I was in Mexico last month and my skin is already transparent. It's rare for me to breathe fresh air, the sun actually hurts me eyes, and my ass falls asleep at least once a day. A coworker told me today, no joke, that I look terrible. Ah, I miss the days of yore when I was actually an attractive person. You know, like 6 months ago.

So @Scarlet, to answer your question apparently people perceive me as looking terrible.

In all reality though I am involved in more meetings at work and I have been given more complex assignments. I am not a CPA yet either but I am given these opportunities because I am “on my way to a CPA” (thank you Peter).

I have the opposite problem of many. Now that they know I'm studying everyone sees me as one foot out the door.

I've gained respect around the office. My official title is “Senior Staff Accountant” yet the Controller and COO have taken to describing me as “second in charge in finance,” “the most senior – senior accountant,” and the COO just tells people if it is related to Finance, you can talk to Steph she is almost a CPA. How complimentary of them? I think the COO just figured out within the last year or 2 that I'm good.

They are paying the way for me to do this and I've been promised a new official title (that reflects what I actually already do) and a nice raise…

ETA: I'm obviously not licensed yet, but I feel a marked difference in the way I'm treated in the office since I started this pursuit.

I don't think so for me. My experience still seems to impress people more than my license. But even at 45 years old I still get a kick out of my parents introducing me to their friends as “our daughter, the CPA” lol.
