Anyone else feel this way?

I know we all feel this way and I am most certainly not the only one, but how do I get over feeling so stinking sorry for myself while studying everyday and everyone else gets to just go on with their normal lives and do whatever they want to when they want to. I’ve been down this weekend because most of last week and this weekend my significant other has been away doing “fun” things while I study. This week he is off to watch a baseball game the day before my exam and I’m just feeling sorry for myself and being halfway mean to him. But, this morning he was on his way to work and I called to apologize, so I’m making a step in the right direction. All I want to do is be able to feel like I can visit family, watch a little television, and play with my dog without feeling bad about it. I was hoping to pass all of these exams before I started my job next month so I scheduled them all way too close together. I’ve taken 3 and yet to pass one. Reg is Wednesday and I’m hoping for the best, but still do not feel prepared. Ok, I’m done ranting…

When I started studying in January, I felt I was never going to be able to accomplish this. Here we are in August and I have one left, which I take August 28th. It's FAR, but have been studying like a mad man because I know it could all be over in just a few short weeks. Keep pushing and it will be over before you know it.

    AUD: April 2014 - 85
    REG: May 2014 - 83
    BEC: July 2014 - 82

@sep7uakron were you working while taking these exams? I guess I just can't get into a groove where I can balance everything.

Realize that this is temporary. All comes down to how bad do you want it.

Also, and I know some will disagree, but I would stop jumping around and focus on one exam until you pass it.

    Good luck.

I completely agree with not jumping around. I had to schedule all of my exams back in January to receive my books and Becker classes to be paid for. Once I start retakes I plan on sticking to one exam.

@jrd To be honest, I just accept my self pity. Trying to fight the feeling only made it stronger for me. I also got rid of all social media for now so I'm not seeing pictures of people laying out by the pool and going on Hawaiian vacations on Facebook.

Realize that when you finish this, you will have “CPA” next to your name, (which garners an asscrapload of respect), and your significant other won't. He'll be the one jealous of you, your title and your $ once you finish. Just don't pay for any tickets to baseball games for him.

    Licensed Florida CPA:
    B: 71, 73, 79
    A: 83
    R: 78 (expired), 77
    F: 74, 74, 80

    It's finally freaking over.

This is why there are many accountants, but not as many CPAs. Many people are not willing to make the sacrifices required to pass the exam. Especially when you're young and want to go out and party and continue to act like you live in a frat house even after graduation. Just keep moving forward.

I work full time, around 50 hours a week. I get into the office early and work until 5:30pm. I always eat dinner with my wife and then study until 11pm. It's a struggle, but well worth it. She has been extremely supportive. It's just as difficult on a spouse as it is the person actually studying. We booked an all inclusive 2 week vacation for September my first week of studying. I committed to her that I would be done by the end of August. I won't go back on my word and that is what drives me.

Thanks everyone. As I said, I know everyone on here is going through this or has gone through it. This is just the first time it has hit me so hard. I also feel like this would be much easier if I was actually married so I didn't have to make time to see him too. Being able to come home and him be there would be so much easier. I really need to finish this before next summer because that is when the wedding will be. I can't even begin to imagine trying to plan a wedding though this process too. But I know it has been done. I've read several peoples' success stories on here and that motivates me.

@sep7akron that is too sweet and I bet she is thrilled that you are almost done. Congrats and I hope you guys have an awesome vacation!

I just need to buckle down, get a better study schedule that fits into working, working out, and spending what time I can with people that matter. I know I'll be working crazy hours when my job starts, but somehow I feel like I will be able to be more disciplined with studying because I'll actually have more of a routine.

Hi jrd – I had a total pity party for myself a couple of days ago. While you're planning your work/life/study balance, schedule 2 hours to watch a movie with your guy. It's a great motivator for some serious study time before and a great treat for accomplishing whatever tasks you assign to yourself. Print out a calendar and post it on the fridge with “you” time in bright red 🙂 Your studying will improve as well as your attitude about life.

I have seriously been in a horrible mood for the past few weeks because of this test. My sister got mad at me the other day because she thinks that I'm using the CPA Exam as an excuse not to see her while she's home for the summer from college and I just about lost my mind when she said that. I have been on our boat once this entire summer and I have only taken 3 weekends off from studying. It's almost to the point where I'm feeling depressed. But, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel as my (hopfully) last section is in 2 weeks.

@CPA50 scheduling little dates like that is a great idea!

@Amanda I know exactly what you mean! My entire family stays on me wondering why I'm never able to come over or spend time with them. Just last night my brother texted me to come over to my grandparents for some homemade ice cream. Of course I couldn't bc I was studying. Then later that night my Mom text me and says you missed out on a great time. Do they think I would rather be sitting and studying my whole Sunday away as to just hanging out worry free? Good luck to you on your last exam though! I will so happy when I can see that light!

    It's normal.

My wife was all like, “I know what it's like. I had to study for the GMATs for my MBA.”

That set me off. I basically told her a moron could get an MBA these days and they are basically TP unless you go to Wharton. I owed her apology flowers after that one.

Oh man that's rough! My Aunt is trying to take the Praxis and keeps failing it and she has been comparing us….I'm like no one really knows what has to go into this exam besides other people who are going through the same thing. I do a pretty good job of keeping my mouth shut except when she thinks she studies a lot when she studies MAYBE 2 full days before her exam….it's a joke.

@jrd seriously, family can be the worst about this test. My mom is like guilt tripping me for never coming out to the lake to see them this summer & then they all tell me I'm overstudying and need some time off. I want to scream because they dont get it. But they SHOULD because my dad is an engineer and went to MIT…I know he knows exactly what its like to study for huge tests and have a lot of pressure but clearly, he doesnt remember it!
