Currently work for a 30+ person CPA firm in the Midwest.
For FS audits, we currently use Accountant’s Trial Balance (ATB) to import the client’s trial balance and we prepare audit section lead schedules in that same software by grouping trial balance accounts to certain audit lead schedules.
Then we draft our audited financial statements in Word as our lead schedules are organized to flow with the order of the line presentation on the balance sheet. But we have to do this manually. Nothing automatic.
It’s not perfect, nor the most efficient manner, but it works. The problem comes when the job goes thru review and the audit adjustments change. Then we have to flow those changes thru the financial statements manually, and at times, this might take a full day.
There has to be a more simple, efficient and cost effective way to do this. I’ve networked and talked to other local, small firms here in the Midwest, and it appears everyone is doing something similar to us – but they all agree it’s insanity.
What is everyone else using?
Ideally, I would like to find a software product that you’re able to import a trial balance, group it to create lead schedules, and then have that software produce the financial statements. The first year it might take MUCH longer to get the initial year set-up, but after that, it’s easy. Any changes to audit adjustments just automatically flows thru to the balance sheet, cash flow statement, etc… Even better if there’s a way to draft footnotes and have the amounts in those footnotes update automatically – but now I’m just getting greedy, I know.
Thoughts? Thanks for your help.
