Skim to see what the question is asking you and then read the entire question. Ensure you understand what is wanted.

[CAREER] It is always a good idea to start in public accounting first before moving to private/govt. New employers identify uour experience in public accounting with multi-tasking, team-work, and perseverance characteristics. I would also suggest working for a CPA firm with name recognition. I suggest sucking it up for 3-4 years. If you would like to do consulting or work for the government/government contractor in the future, do AUDIT. If you do tax, you would have to move to a tax department inside a Fortune 500 firm where you could also learn more about financial accounting experience. THEN move to consulting.

    Just my experience.

[Career] When you intern/apply for your first job, look for a small local firm. The experience is much better and you get to work with all aspects of the client and the firm. This will help you decide what niche you want to pursue.

    [CPA Exam]

Make sure you know if the question is asking if an answer is to choose the correct or to choose the incorrect answer. This always trips me up so I make sure to check to make sure I am picking the proper response.

[CPA EXAM]-The Key for me finally passing AUD was to relate one key word to a topic, so when I would read that key word, I would know exactly what they were asking for. For example: “inquiry” would almost always relate to litigation/inquiry of lawyer.

    [CPA Exam]

Having passed the first two sections that I have taken, BEC & REG, I think that I have found a study system that works for me. I focus my attentions towards completing the Becker multiple choice questions and I usually take notes on the questions that I miss. Occasionally I will do progress tests instead of the homework because I find it very frustrating and demotivating to see that hated yellow caution tape go across the screen; the progress tests allow me to take 20 questions without having my momentum be crushed by a few missed questions. I think that is a useful way to study for the test because in the real test we don't get to see whether or not we got a question right. So by focusing on weak areas through progress tests I am able to keep my focus and answer more questions in a shorter period of time than the alternative of seeing me failures/successes immediately.

[CPA Exam] Make sure you give yourself enough time to struggle through the simulations. I usually shoot for about 1 1/2-2 hours for simulations. If you give yourself less than this your at risk of panicking and may not do as well on the simulations as you would have otherwise.

CPA Exam Advice- Be thorough when studying. Use the Ninja method and don't cut corners. Get that MCQ trending score up in the 80's. Also, don't forget to work on timing of the exam. Make sure you give yourself enough time to finish.

Public Accounting(tax): During busy season, be sure to communicate effectively the amount of time it will take you to complete a project. If you accept every project that is given to you without thought of deadlines or workload, you will overwork yourself. Then you will provide a low quality of work to the reviewer. This creates a worse situation than if you would have told them upfront that you would love to work on their project, although you will not be able to get to it until ________ day. At that point they can decide if they want to wait that long or give it to someone with a lesser workload than yourself.

    [CPA EXAM]-

If you are struggling for motivation to tackle a retake (like myself) – stop, think and remind yourself WHY you are doing this.
Remind yourself of your ultimate goal and why you set out to do this in the first place.
Regardless if it's financially driven or just for those three letters following your name.
    OWN YOUR GOAL.

P.S Jeff- This thread is awesome. I've been reading it all morning and checking for other posts.. you all are amazing!

REG- 69- Felt discouraged.. took a break.
AUD- 69, 74- The worst feeling ever. Far more painful than a break up.

[CPA Exam] Make sure to flag the questions you passed to make sure everything is answered. Flag and pass the question if it is taking longer than the others. Then come back to your flags afterwards. Some times other questions might answer the one you are having trouble with.
