    [cpa exam]

The flags are your friends, if you are stuck between two answers, mark the question and move on, sometime another question will jog your memory and help on a prior question. This will allow you to move on and then go back and know how much time you have allotted to that section left. If you have 10 extra minutes on a section you won't feel rushed when you go back to that question.

    Bonus:
plan and allocate your time for each section. you want to make sure you have time for the sims at the end

[CPA Exam] – A new course requirement will be enacted this upcoming January to received your CPA license (I just was informed on this information a couple days ago). Per the CalCPA website: Starting on Jan. 1, 2017, and applicant will be required to take a standalone 3-semester or 4-quarter unit course devoted solely to accounting ethics or accountants’ professional responsibilities as part of the 10 unit ethics requirement.

If you are like me and do not want to pay thousands of dollars to take this course at a university, Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, CA is offering this course ONLINE for less than $40 per unit.

    Pre-test:
Get a good amount of sleep the night before your test. Wake up plenty early so you have time to have a good breakfast and relax before making the drive to the test center. Play some music that gets you pumped up and positive on your way to the test or something that will make you laugh. I recommend not doing any studying or reviewing the morning of the test as this just may make you more anxious which will do more harm than good.

    At the test center:
Don't fret too much about arriving early and having to sit in the waiting room. Depending on how busy your test center is, you might be able to go straight in and test right away if they have an open seat. If not, take a walk around the block and come back. During the exam, remember you have prepared hard for this and there is no use in panicking or getting down on yourself. You never truly know how you did on the exam until your score comes back. Contrary to some advice, consider taking one short break to give your eyes and mind a quick rest and get a drink of water.

    After the test:
Try not to judge how you did on the exam, because you will probably be totally wrong. Going with that, don't get down on yourself after the exam either. Go do something fun afterwards and get your mind off it.

[Public Accounting] Try to pass the CPA as soon as possible, having material fresh on your mind is unbeatable.

Don't get involved in office politics. Just do good work and let your work speak for itself. It doesn't take long for all of the managers to know who's good and who they'll want on their engagements.

Last but not least, check your own work twice, three times if necessary.

[CPA Exam] Budget your time and how much you think you need to spend on each question/section. I run through practice exams once a week for about six weeks leading up to my exam timing myself seeing if I think I need or can afford to spend more or less time on each section. You always have more time than you think, and when you rush through questions (at least with me) you tend to overlook and miss easy questions. Once you reach your allotted time on each section, move on. If you're still unsure about some, just go with your gut.

[CAREER] – When you start a new job, save a copy of the job description when you were originally hired. Sometimes its easy to forget all the details of what you do on a daily basis. You can use this to update your LinkedIn, and eventually use it to update your resume when you start looking for new opportunities!

    Career/Resume/Interview:

    Resume tips:
    1. Don't just list the duties of your previous positions; rather list How you Improved the Job. I always say in interviews my main goal if I have to leave a job is to leave it better than I found it. I received many compliments on my Resume from HR/Interviewers because almost all of it was how I improved the companies I had worked for.
    2. Spellcheck!
    3. Format it to look appealing to the eye. Ask friends, look online, for good resume templates. I was tasked with finding my replacement at a previous job and the amount of poorly constructed resumes was shocking. One page, highlight your accomplishments, make it look appealing.

[Interview] – The person interviewing you has probably conducted hundreds of interviews. To them, its just another interview. They're not nervous, so why should you be? Realize that you aren't in a life or death situation, its just an interview.

Keep track of time for each section of the exam, I find it easiest to write down what time you need to move on and stick to it!!!

    Career/Resume/Interview (i.e. general career tips)
Have a professional to review your resume and provide feedback. This person should preferably be a person who is/has worked in the area of HR. Generally, this person can help you in regards to resume presentation which will help your resume stand out over competition.

If you're on a time crunch, study and focus on the most heavily tested topics as this makes the material less overwhelming.

    (CPA Exam)

Do take notes when you study. For subjects like REG, where you tend to forget the ones that you earlier read, the best strategy would be to practice the already studied ones at least 20 mcqs every single day along with your new ones that your studying. This everyday tonic of 20 MCQS helps you to recollect. Complete all your Chapters/MCQs/SIM at least 10 days before the exam.

Read the notes for the next 1 day. Redo all the mcqs/sims for the next 5 days and do a practice exam. Concentrate your weakness from the practice exam results for the next 3 days. On the last day before the exam, relax and re-read the notes. On the morning of the exam, go for a walk/jogging/exercise for half an hour. Believe in your hard work and face the beast!
