For REG–If the instructions to MCQ say a consolidated return is filed, do not include dividend income from subsidiary to parent. If an entity qualifies to file a consolidated tax return, the DRD no longer matters for dividends received from the subsidiary being consolidated.

These dividends roll around and bounce off the walls of the consolidated group, but they never find the exit. Therefore, they are eliminated for filing purposes.

If MCQ is asking for income from these dividends, the answer is $0.

[CPA Exam] If I feel frustrated with a question, I often take a break by doing some sort of physical activity (push ups, sit-ups, jump rope, or even a brief walk).

[Resume] Do not include job duties on your resume that are not accurate. Also do not overstate your abilities or skills. Your future employer will find out.

SN: A manager at my job overstated his job duties and skills during an interview at a different company. He called it “fluff”. The company offered him the position, but 3 months later they fired him.

(CPA Exam) I would go through as many questions and practice exams as possible. Read the reason for the answer whether right or wrong, and make notes for areas that are troublesome for you.

[CPA Exam] Establish a productive routine, and don't forget to live a little. Yes, the exam demands a lot of time, but you have to remain sane as well. So, balance it out as best as you can!

[CPA Exam] – 1. Practice 50-100 questions per day. This will build your confidence and increase your knowledge over different topics.
    2. Write down questions you get wrong and read the explanations provided or research further to ensure you are comfortable with the topic.
    3. If you are struggling with a topic practice as many questions as possible over it.

[CPA EXAM/CAREER] Nothing changes until your “mission” becomes your obsession, become so obsessed with becoming a CPA that nothing else matters. Release mediocrity and aim for genius.

[Public Accounting] Admit when you're wrong – everyone makes mistakes, not everyone owns up to them. Once you're in a position where you interact with a client, do your best to have good relations. Working with that client will be much easier if they like you. Tell the senior/manager/partner when you will not be able to meet a deadline, before it gets to a critical point.

[Interview tips] Be sure to have a couple questions ready in case you are asked at the end of the interview, “Do you have any questions?” One great question in this situation is “Is there anything that concerns you about my background or qualifications being a fit for this role?” This gives you the opportunity to address any lingering concerns, if the interviewer mentions any. And if they say no, no concerns — well that also ends the interview on a positive note and reinforces to the interviewer their impression that you are a good candidate for the position.

[CPA Exam] Do tons of MCQs. As you do them be sure to read the comments as to why you were right on wrong just to constantly refresh your memory with the material.

[CPA Exam] For MCQ I like to read the question at the end first so that when I read through the entire question I don't get overwhelmed with the extra (and irrelevant) details.

Make sure you participate in all Accounting club/society programs as soon as you can in college. I was able to secure an internship with a Big 4 firm due to early relationships formed from these meetings. It also gets you face to face time with the actual recruiters who can put a face to a name once that resume comes across their desk.
