Eh… after a long time with Becker… and – after having watched only three of Roger’s Lectures on YouTube – I wonder if I would have done better in the Roger’s Review course…

If I may say why…

My first course in accounting was taught by a guy with a voice and wit similar to Howard Stern… He made accounting so fun in the first year, it carried me through the remainder of all the more difficult work in the latter years… If it had been the other way around, then I probably would have switched majors…

That said, when I saw Becker advertised, it was supposed to be the top flight review, so I jumped at it thinking I would get a quality product… But – in fact – the lectures are mundane and abstruse… and their attempts at humor totally suck… and, if you think this is just my opinion, then I challenge you to take any one of Tim Gearty’s lectures and pause the playback in the middle of one of his sentences… and recall there used to be a movie called “Faces of Death”… But in Tim’s case it’s more like “Faces of Extreme Pain”… In all the time I have been studying, maybe like two or three “pauses” have produced a decent looking headshot of him – the rest of the time, it kind of looks like someone just drove a fork into his leg… He’s not a bad looking guy at all, and he’s certainly no dummy – but that’s not the point here for me… I guess the point is, he may be a great accountant, and I do believe he’s probably a really nice guy, and Becker may even be a top flight review course, but he’s not getting through to me… Becker is good stuff, but – sad to say – it’s not really my thing…

So I started shopping around, and someone here told me to watch the Roger CPA Reviews… and I am glad I did… The lectures are upbeat, full of good info, and – while Roger can be refreshingly silly at times – sometimes he comes across with a zinger that actually makes me laugh out loud, like for real… Without deprecating Roger – he kind of reminds me of Johnny from Airplane! – which, if anyone remembers Johnny’s zingers in the movie, are kind of like zany blasts of comedy woven into the narrative… You can see it when you watch one of Roger’s videos… But, then, when you pause the video to take a note or something, he doesn’t look like he just kicked his shin into the coffee table…

I’ve only seen a few of Roger’s videos so far, but I am beginning to wish I had taken the Roger’s Review… Becker is so sedentary… And, yeah, since I do feel a need to stick a fork in my leg just to stay with it because of Becker’s zombified pedagogy, I can pretty much say the faces of extreme pain approach isnt really my thing… At least Roger tends to lend some levity to this very challenging review process and keeps me awake and listening… To boot, the lectures seem strong and cogent, and I get the feeling I’d have done a lot better with Roger from the get go…

II probably still owe some allegiance to Becker because they have taught me a lot, but methinks I would do well to cast my net over the other side at this point…
