    Hi guys,

I wanted to ask you about dental insurance if any of you work in public accounting. How much do you guys pay monthly for dental insurance? Also – when you go to the dentist, does the insurance cover: Dental exam, X-ray, Cleaning, and Whitening? All of these?

Also – how much is the copay for each dental visit?

    Thanks!

Hey im shortly removed from Public but while there my dental was like $17 bucks a month through Met Life. I had a couple of extractions and I think my portion of the whole thing was like $100 bucks or so. The insurance covered the other $800 or $900. It was pretty good.

Hey PasstheCPA7 – I'm currently in public accounting and pay roughly $30/ month for my wife and I. Regular checkups every 6 months, which include a cleaning and exam, are free (x-rays are free every 36 months). We have an individual deductible of $50 and family is $150. (In-network) I pay 20% for any basic restorative (filings, basis extractions, etc.) and 50% for major restorative (crowns, inlays, etc.) and orthodontic work. It’s pretty decent. So if I only go in for a checkup, it'd be $50/ year for two checkups.

Honestly, dental would be the last of my worries. Dental and vision insurance are pretty cheap. It’s the health insurance that will get you.

Thank you guys! For some odd reason, I had thought Dental was $7 a month as a monthly premium??? Someone had told me that, and it seemed too good to be true! This is why I needed to ask this.

How much does Vision typically cost around (per month)?

    Thanks again.

Dental across the board is very standard. There are maximum annual limits, usually between $1,000 and $2,000 depending on your plan. Diagnostic & Preventative are almost always 100%, extractions/fillings/root canals are usually 80% covered, and major services such as crowns are 50% covered. Every job I have ever worked private, government, and non-profit had almost identical plans.

At my current job (quasi-government) I pay $13 per month for both my husband and I.

Vision is similar to dental in that all plans are pretty standard. I pay $9 per month for my husband and I

You know what hasn't ever been consistent in any of my jobs? Health insurance. That's what you need to worry about. I finally have found an employer that makes sure we have good health insurance but I have had really bad plans in my life. Take health insurance costs into consideration into any job you enter into. A lot of people I know pay a lot of money for really crappy plans but it's all their employer offers….

Your monthly premium depends on the firm/company. When they plan for the medical insurance, the firm/company determines the coverage ratio for the upcoming year (X% to be covered by employees + X% to be covered by the firm/company = 100% of the premium)

So more generous your employer, the more they will pay, and lower your monthly premium.

30+ person CPA firm in the Midwest. We have no dental coverage.

By the way, asking someone what they pay for dental insurance really doesn't make much sense. As others have stated, every situation is different based on if the employee bears all of the cost, part of the cost, etc… And not all plans are created equal.

My previous employer did not offer dental insurance (not public accounting which I know you were asking specifically about) and I went out on my own to Delta Dental and got a family plan with a low deductible for $177/mo. Dental is cheap.

However as soyanks mentioned you want/need to know what % of medical/dental your employer pays (and also do they offer FSA). At my last job my employer paid 21% of my health insurance so my premium was $179 per WEEK in addition to the $177/mo dental. I was paying close to 1000/mo for medical and dental out of pocket.

My NEW job pays 72% of medical AND dental so I'll be paying out of pocket less than half of what I was last year.
