So I am approaching my one year anniversary of working in public accounting. And boy has it been a roller coaster. I have taken a not so traditional route -going from private industry to public accounting.

In my last job although I started as an AP clerk- was able to work my up to more of a leadership role by understanding of processes, application of GAAP, and management accounting. I worked two years in private before getting my CPA and wanting the challenge of public.

My first year as an audit staff has been quite different. Something I consistently struggle with is documenting our audit findings in a concise easy to follow manner. I started with the standard stuff: cash, fixed assets, AP, payroll. I feel I have a solid understanding of the risks around these areas.

I have recently started doing revenue and following the audit from start to finish- and my first experience has been a struggle. The client was a mess, communicating with the client was a struggle. I also made an error with one of the footnote disclosures that wasn’t caught until the client caught it. An embarrassing experience for the firm, manager, and more importantly me.

How has everyone else’s first year experiences been? I’m I the only one who had a rough first year.
