Finally taking CPA exam in January

I have been on and off studying, but not religiously, for some time now. I am 47 years old and got back into the work force in 2012 after raising my kids. It’s been a discouraging path because I often feel passed up at work for the younger college grads. I decided if I want any future other than a dead end job, I need to pass this test so I can prove myself.

I am really just looking for some support and encouragement. I’ve been using the Wiley book, as the comprehensive explanations help me. I am worried because I only have less than 2 months until the FAR exam. I would really like to tackle this thing once and for all in 2016 – all 4 parts. I know I can do it, but I just have to do it by doing it.

I am invisible at work, even though I work hard, I feel that I am simply not recognized and won’t be. I want to work at another company and start over.

Any encouragement and advice you can send my way to help me pass this test in January – I appreciate it!!

2 months is enough time to study for FAR. Have a solid study schedule in mind and stick to it. Good luck!

sjdelta – done well and for the right reasons these exams will give you a great sense of accomplishment. i am older than you and i look at people around me at work and they are goal-less. just getting through the day. i am very goal driven. these exams are not easy and the process is demanding but i love the feel of a score over 74. this is a career change for me and i am unsure how it will end up but for now i am happy to be studying and learning. don't take your cues from other people – dig into this and prove to yourself what you can do and see where it leads. good luck!

When I first became an auditor at 25 a few years ago I ended up working with a lady who looked really, really familiar. Turns out it was the mother of a girl I went to high school with. She'd been a stay at home mom all her life, had gotten sick of it, left everything she had (hubby was rich and she was “cared for”) and set out to make a life for herself. She got her masters in accounting and passed all 4 exams in 1 window and scored in the 90s for all of the exams. She ended up leaving our firm shortly to go work as an auditor for Qualcomm- their hiring process is 6-9 months long. It can be done.

Thank you for your responses. I will definitely read that link as well. I am so frustrated at my current job. The morale is terrible and there is no advancement in my position. I am trying to stay strong and encouraged, but can't help getting discouraged by the politics here. I hope I can get this accomplished in 8 weeks.

SJ you got this. I just turned 47 and passed all 4 in 6 months working full time. You are motivated so you can do it.

I am taking my last class to complete accounting courses so I can sit for CPA exams. I am not sure which one should I knock off first. Any suggestions? What books should I use to prep for these exams? I read lot of people using Ninja for MCQ. Any suggestions or ideas before I tame this lion will help. Thanks all!!

I'm 47 as well and have to take Government/Not for Profit to meet the 24 accounting credit requirement and then I'm applying. I've been on this forum few months now and it is very encouraging for our age group! We can ALL do this, never too late! I've read that 8 weeks is enough for studying FAR, I'm tackling that first. Still on the fence about Roger or Becker but I have a few months to decide while I finish my last class and take the CGFM exam, yep I'm doing that too…..hope to be done by Spring so I can solely focus on the CPA.

2 months is a loooooooooong time.

I'm 40. It took me a year after graduation to find a job. There's not much you can do about that.

Thank you AGAIN! I feel encouraged again. I am going to conquer this! It is great to know that there are many others my age doing this too.
