FAR? Do I need to take Advanced Acct and Gov’t/Non-Profit classes

I have a Professor telling me I need to take these classes to pass FAR.

Will the NINJA study material or some other be enough to pass without taking these classes. I already have enough classes to sit for the exam.

    Thanks

I didn't take either of those classes and passed FAR on the first try with a Wiley book, Ninja Notes, and the Wiley Test Bank (Ninja MCQ was not out then). Classes are designed to go into a lot more detail than the exams do. It may give you a basis, but I got the basis I needed from the required Intermediate accounting courses that were required. Either way, you are going to spend a good deal of time teaching yourself the material from your review books, not from your classes or class textbooks.

CPA Exam - Finally DONE (November 2014)
    BEC (08/10/13) 80
    AUD (08/24/13) 65 (11/13/13) 85
    FAR (04/12/14) 81
    REG (07/19/14) 69 (11/29/14) 87!!

I was going to take FAR last summer but after doing the review course, I knew I needed to take at least the advanced acctg course (which I did this spring) I wish our local school had a government course to take because I really need the extra there too…

Advanced Accounting isn't a bad idea. I'm not sure what most classes are like but mine was about two thirds just on consolidation.

Government Accounting is great if you just need an elective to squeeze in. Government accounting makes up about 20 to 25% of the FAR exam so having a good understanding of it before you crack open any review material for the CPA exam is very helpful. But with that said most CPA candidates first exposure to Government Accounting is when studying for the exam. I knew zero about it before starting Becker and it scared me a bit. But I worked it hard in my review material and that subject became one of my strongest areas.

So both classes are helpful but not required. You'll just have to make up the work when you start a review course.

No, don't waste your money on any more college classes. Buy a good CPA review course and be done with the thing. If you are willing to study, they teach you all you need to know.

I took GNP and walked away not knowing spit so I'd probably not waste my time.

    BEC - 83 7/25
    REG - 76 5/2/15
AUD - Hopefully before MY Audit...7/5?
    FAR - 83 5/2/16

I got a governmental job and I never took a class in governmental accounting. Most of what I am studying is high level unlike the low level work I spend most of my days doing. Wish I could say my job made the questions a breeze but my ninja trending score disagrees.

Giving up is not an option.

You do not need those classes to pass but they both could help. When you do the cost, equity and consolidation methods in Advance accounting. Govt will help understand basic JEs and diff funds, how there effected and how they are used for govt wide financials. Now again you don't need them but you will have an jump on the test by studying 8 chapters instead of 10 if you are using Becker materials

Does he teach any of those classes by any chance?

Ditto to what everyone else said.

    Wow

want to say thanks to all that are giving their opinion.

Just what I figured, a tenure professor trying to make money for the university LOL

I have bought the Gov't/NP book and can use it as a reference if need be.

I am using NINJA combo for AUD and am very impressed with it so fare.

So I will use NINJA combo for FAR and put my faith in it.

and take basket weaving for the last couple of credits I need to finish my Masters.

    Thanks Again for your input.

I didn't take advanced accounting (consolidations) and my gov't class was a joke. I never really learned a damn thing about gov and nfp – i still don't know what an encumbrance is. I passed Far.

I DIDN'T LEARN SQUAT ! in the GNP class in college. It was probable the most USELESS class i have ever taken.

The professor was so Laid Back that he rarely lectured and taught anything. Heck, the textbook was so small and thin, it felt more like a Brochure.

I'm actually learning more from the three Units in my Gleim Review course on GNP than my entire class.

You don't need a class, but you need to master the MCQs for Gov and NFP. They are easy points that will help you get you a pass on the exam…advanced accounting is important.

I learned everything from my review materials…

    FAR - 76
    AUD - 75
    BEC - 75
    REG - 76

Now I need some experience!!! And some networking...

I had an amazing teacher for Gov/NFP and I think it did help me with those far chapters. I passed far before taking the adv financial class. Teacher sucked anyways so I don't think it would've helped.
