FAR 57 to 83 – you can do it!

I am thankful for people here in the forum for their encouragement and recommendations and the willingness to help each other going through this tough journey. I usually just read what others wrote but this time I wanted to contribute my experience in case this helps anyone even a little bit. I understand everyone has their own style of studying and this is what worked for me.

I used Wiley in my first try. I was prolonging the study, postponed the test date couple of times, meantime I was just lost in the detail of that monstrous study materials during the 2 months of studying / pretend studying FAR. I admit that I only “kind of” understood the material and hoped to get lucky in the exam. I knew I didn’t do well when I walked out of the test center but it felt like FAR slapped me on the face when I found out my demoralizing score of 57!

Hated my life and FAR for few days then decided to ditch FAR and move on to AUD because I was just so sick of FAR. Switched to Roger review course for AUD and felt pretty good about AUD test after studying for two months.

Then there I was, after AUD exam, scheduled to retake FAR in 4 weeks (because my NTS was expiring), debating whether to give it a shot or postpone and be more prepared. Big thanks to the recommendations from the people in this forum, I decided to do the retake in 4 weeks. I bought Roger Cram course since his lecture style worked for me in AUD. I finally saw the big picture watching his lectures. I used Wiley test bank and did MCQ and TBS as many as I can.

My FAR retake was similar to my first exam, lots of questions from G** section which I did well but my 2nd testlet didn’t get harder, which made me having this bad feeling of “I didn’t do well in my 1st testlet, again…” The SIMs were doable, yes, it was painful to click back and forth between the tabs but the context was within the FAR study content. I did okay overall and guessed one of the SIMs.

I was 95% sure I didn’t pass because I felt that I didn’t do much differently in my retake compared to my 1st exam. I did well in G** section but I also did well on that in my 1st exam. I probably did 20% better on SIMs in my retake. I was so pissed and depressed… but, I started to plan my 3rd try on FAR and I’ve been studying last few days.

I wasn’t even in a hurry to find out the score release because I didn’t want to see another painful failing number. Then BAM! I couldn’t believe I got 83 on FAR! My AUD was only 79, which I felt much more confident about.. I am still not sure how I got 57 and 83 between my two tries. What I do know is though I did understand the big picture during the study for retake and it helped me a lot. Luck probably worked as well, maybe the ones I guessed in retake were pretest.

I am not a fast MCQ solver, I am not young anymore – hence the dying brain cells 😉 and English is my 2nd language. I found the review course that worked for me and studied hard preparing the retake. It was tiring, frustrating and often discouraging but I pulled it through. If I could it, you most certainly can do it! Sometimes a little encouragement from a stranger helps you get back on track and march again. Just remember there are so many times we all want to give up and walk away, it’s normal but don’t give up, eventually you will win in this battle if you persistently try!!!

    Good luck!

I needed to read this. I failed FAR on my first attempt miserably yesterday so this gives me hope. Thanks @cando!

    I had a 49 to 79. Definitely doable.

@SchruteBeet – you're welcome, I am glad my posting encouraged someone!

I see you've done so well in other sections, you certainly and will get this FAR out of your way!
I am going to start REG in January, I might need your advice on how to tackle that one 🙂

    Hi Cando,
So glad for you on passing FAR.
I just launched my CPA journey last month, but due to master's degree's assignments is it so hard to allocate your time among work, studying, and CPA.

Thanks for your very encouraging words. I truly need 'em as I had a thought to give up on CPA for while.

No pain no gain. keep digging, you will eventually find the treasure.

Did you guys change the study material? I changed from Becker access expiration to Gleim but my score in FAR went from 70 to 59. Please guide me.

58 -> (two months of studying from the beginning) -> 86

    Things that may have helped:
    1) Started all over by rereading and retaking notes
    2) Got a new test bank
    3) Actually practiced sims – I didn't the first time because I thought if I knew MCQs I would know sims and there is a rare chance of seeing a similar sim on the exam….. Practicing sims will help you find your weak areas and give you an idea on how to fill out blank entries to at least get a few points.

@Joshua – yes, agreed! I so wanted to call it a day and walk away while staying late studying after work and letting my husband pretty much being a single dad for the most of the year…
But the sweetness after conquering that evil FAR is just so satisfying, even my boss's nagging sound was manageable today, or did I celebrate so much last night I wasn't very coherent today 😉
