It’s bring your child to work day and I have to explain what the accounting department does to 16 grade school and middle school children. Hmmmm. Any suggestions? We have someone else explaining AP, Credit, and Inventory Control. I just need to explain general ledger accounting and I’m lost. I’ve always just told my children (4,2, and 1) that I add up numbers all day. 🙂 Not sure how to describe reconciliations, journal entries, and closing the books. This is happening at 9:15 so please help!

I think for that age level I'd explain it like sorting. Its nice to know that you have 4,000 legos. But some people want to know that 1,000 are blue and 1,500 are yellow, and 1500 are green while other people need to know how many of the blue legos are full blocks versus how many are half blocks and then sometimes you get a lego with wheels and have NO idea what to do with it but have to figure out what the sorting rules are to decide which rule it fits into the best. Your job as the accountant is to take the legos and be able to put them into buckets that will make sense to the people who ask questions about the legos.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

Good Luck! My three year old twins think Mommy is a “counter” and I look at important papers all day and count things. They are convinced that right now my job is to count all of Santa's presents so that everyone gets the same number and it's fair (because being fair is really important when you are a twin). Not quite the best explanation but it somehow works out in their little brains.

    REG - 8/31/15
    BEC - 74

I saw these comments too late. I totally bombed and the two group leaders had to save me. Thank goodness one of those leaders was our controller. Whew! Other people's children make me nervous. Thanks for the input! I'm sure I'll have to do this again next year.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"
