Does anyone know a great place to start to get free materials or a good paid online course? How do people become skilled at building these excel sheets?

i started downloading free tutorials at accounting web which have helped here and there. i have noticed although i can use the basics of Excel, i’m not great at making my spreadsheets usable or readable from scratch. I also try to look at what my oc-workers spreadsheets look like and they’re not that great either lol. Anyone got some different suggestions other than accounting web?

Huge second to ryuhadoken's suggestion! You can also read “Slaying the Excel Dragon”, written by the same guy who runs the Youtube channel. It's free with Kindle Unlimited, but definitely worth paying for. I also have his book about array formulas; and it's great as well.

I would highly recommend learning as many keyboard shortcuts as you can master. Ctrl* probably saved me hours of time.

Also, I converted a lot of my coworkers to ASAP Utilities, as per recommendation of a nice CPA candidate here 🙂

Best way to learn is just to pick something, try to figure out how to optimize, and Google everything you don't know how to do. Like, “I need it to SUM this column based on criteria in both these other columns – how can I do that?” Google and figure it out! I consider myself highly proficient in Excel and this is how I learned everything useful that I know.

These utilities make mass changes (such as make all positive numbers negative, delete extra spaces, etc) a breeze. Pretty much everything they do can be done with formulas, but ASAP is more convenient and saves loads of time.
