Hey Ninjas, this is somewhat job related and not pertaining to the CPA exam but I work for a mid-size public accounting firm and now it is evaluation season. I’ve been with the firm for several months now as a staff. In our firm we have many goals that we must achieve from one Fiscal Year end to the other. One of which happens to be chargeable hours of roughly 1600 (billable hours). I started about 6 months later into the new fiscal year and have yet been told what my goal is. I’ve asked many resources throughout the firm and i have gotten mixed answers. My fear is that i’m not meeting that chargeable hour goal. I ask my managers and seniors that i mainly work with if they have any chargeable work for me to work on and they almost never have anything and if they do it’s something that can be completed in minimal time. I thought managers were responsible for supplying the work? If i were to ask a partner about work they always come up with small stuff like looking in the codification for something. So in preparation for my evaluation meeting where the partners and managers and seniors discuss my performance throughout the year, I need to know how effectively to handle this situation. I believe it’s not my fault but others may see it differently. Also, i’m the newbie in the group so everyone now has work that they can be working on and i don’t, not really sure what the message is behind it but as i sat in my cube the past three days just reading company website and trying to look productive, i have some worries. Someone please put my mind at ease and offer some advice.

I suggest you try sending emails, asking for work or following up on a previous time you asked for work. That way, if during your performance review, it's mentioned you didn't meet your hours, you have proof that you did reach out to others.
