I hope the studying is going well! Keep at it!

For those who are prepares or third party designee, I would like to know how to obtain a PIN number.

Most things I have read (googled) say it is just a random number you create, other places say you need to register with the IRS and fill out an application. Please assist with how to obtain these pins.

I just started using one on tax returns. I am not aware of any registry for a PIN#.
The EFIN and PTIN are a different story.

Recked, thank you for answering. I have a PTIN and CAF number. I thought the EFIN is at the firm level, vs. the person who is the signer. I have looked at the 8879s for example, and it appears that the EFIN/PIN is the EFIN (firm level pin) and the prepare pin (self selected).

If the firm I work for already has an established EFIN, then I just create pin#s for both the third party and ERO signatures, correct? I am glad you responded as I know from your posts, you deal a lot with tax.

Yes, EFIN is the firm level. The firm where I am employed has an EFIN, and I also have my own EFIN for my own business.
The ERO/client pin you can just use any number unless the client specifies.
Your preparer PIN#, you can also use anything, just make sure its consistent.

I am not sure the preparer PIN actually does anything. I have left my boss's PIN on a return that I was listed as the preparer on and there have never been any rejects or errors.
Pick 5 digits and you're all set.
I have also never had anyone ever ask me to confirm the PIN when calling the IRS or state. Maybe because I have a PTIN and CAF, and usually have POA on anything I need to call about.
