For those of us here who didn’t graduate with 150 credits or go for a Masters, it would be good to compile a list of simple courses to rack up the credits needed to fulfill the credit requirement for the CPA.

For me, I couldn’t care less how useful the class is. I simply want to get valid credits in the cheapest and quickest way possible. It is a stupid requirement in my opinion, and with our luck it’ll be dismissed soon after we all pay for and finish these classes.

One path I’m familiar with is LSU Online Distance Learning. There are multiple options for course methods (tests at a center vs online proctor), and the “fully” online method has a nice handful of classes. They’re around $600 per 3 credits, which obviously is miles cheaper than most other classes and institutions out there. I’ve taken Fraud Auditing and Forensic Accounting on LSU ODL and it wasn’t too bad. 4 written questions and a multiple choice quiz per module, a midterm, and a final.

What are some institutions that you’re familiar with, and what are the easiest classes?

I am also short by 24.5 credits but non accounting and non business courses. My plan is to take CLEP credits @ $85 per 3 credit hour subject and do credit banking with Thomas Edison State College which is at almost $600 for one year credit banking. I have inquire with my state board they only need the credits be shown in the transcript of TESC.

    FAR (Apr 2015) - 88
    AUD (July 2015) - 86
    BEC (Oct 2015) - 82
    REG - 73, 70, retake Sept 2016

FEMA offers a decent amount of 1 credit courses. Frederick Community College converts the credits and issues on of their transcripts also costs $85 per credit. Check with your state board if this is acceptable.

Check with your local community college. In my area, It costs around 70 bucks to get 1 credit. Some of the courses you can do them purely online. Just pick some courses that you feel interested in. It never hurts to learn different things.

Check with your state, but NASBA and the New York State board will accept CLEP credits and DSST (Dante) credits even if they are not on a college transcript. There are a number of tests available, and each one is either 3 or 6 credits. Each CLEP costs $60, and I think DSSTs are similarly priced.

Do they accept CLEP credit or something similar in California? I need about 15 units and I want to get them asap.

Just for reference, I'm pretty sure CLEP is $80 and most proctoring locations will charge a fee too of about $20 or so, so usually more like $100 each.

@CalCPA, try calling your state board and asking that question. I only know about New York since I contacted them with that question.
