AnonymousInactiveCPAexcel has partnered with the University of North Alabama (UNA) to offer the Professional Accounting Prep Program. The program is designed to help individuals earn university accounting credits to meet the 150-hour requirement to be eligible to take the CPA Exam.
Many individuals looking to make a career change to accounting discover that they need additional academic coursework. The UNA Professional Accounting Prep Program is designed to meet these educational needs and provides the following benefits:
Take up to eight 3-credit hour accounting/business law courses. The courses offered are those that are commonly required by states to sit for the CPA Exam.
All courses are offered online to meet the demands of your busy life.
All courses are taught by full-time faculty at UNA using state-of-the-art instructional technology developed by Efficient Learning Systems. These faculty are available to provide guidance and feedback as you complete the course requirements.
Tuition is $475 per 3-credit course, which includes the costs of all study text materials.
Hope this is helpful for those needing additional credits. *kma*

fsugirl2005ParticipantI am definitely going to look into this because I need 6 more credit hours to meet my 150. Actually, I will have 152 when it's all over.
Just looked at the courses they are offering. The only one I can take is Tax II which is great. Then I can stroll over to LSU and take their Govt/NFP class and then I'll be done. But then again, I'm still going to check with FSU to see if I can do both of my courses long distance and use someone here at the FSU Medical school to proctor it. Don't see why they wouldn't go for that.

StephAVMemberHmm, I still need to take REG and AUD exams, but I took tax and audit in school… I wonder if I could take these to earn additional credits? StudyMonk, do you have an accounting degree? Or is this more for non-Accounting majors? The price is right!

I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.March 5, 2014 at 11:43 pm #638854
Study MonkMember@StephAV My degree is in business economics with an emphasis in accounting. I had 24 units of accounting and over 150 hours for the past few years now. I wasn't around CPA minded people for a while and found out that California will now require 30 units in accounting and 10 units in ethical focused classes(auditing/ethics/business law). So basically after I pass these CPAexcel classes I am looking to probably have around 170 units and no masters lol.
In California you can retake the same accounting classes for credit and they qualify. I confirmed this with my board and found it ironic that I could retake basic accounting classes after finishing intermediate classes. The California board is very helpful and I would suggest asking your board whether you can take 2 classes with the same name. I took an audit class back in college and I am now taking CPAexcel's financial statement auditing class(not same name but apparently doesn't matter).
This program is not designed for non accounting majors, but people who need units to qualify for the CPA exam. There are dozen's of these money makers everywhere and almost every review course has one. Many of the others programs offered through CPA software review courses limit the amount of units you can get to 6. You can get up to 30 through CPAexcel.
I actually found my CPAexcel audit class to be harder than I originally anticipated. I was expecting that the exams would pull questions from the homework, but was instead surprised to find exams harder than my actual audit exam. These classes really do force you to know the material well as the quizzes test you on the mundane info you don't find in the cpaexcel test bank.
I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. StephAVMemberThanks Study Monk! I'm from CA too, so that is super helpful! I kind of hate to pay for a “review course” when I already have Roger… But I need the units and I've been contemplating the UCLA extension classes as an option. So to just do what I already need to do and for less than the UCLA classes and be almost done with my units… Sounds great!
I have another question if you don't mind… Is the schedule totally flexible? Can you start the course at any time? I looked into Roger's for credit option and it was not flexible you had to enroll for the semester by a certain date and if you didn't well better luck next semester…

Study MonkMemberIt's relatively flexible. You can enroll any day of the year, but you have two semesters to finish the class(s). If you enroll in the very end of a semester it can severely shorten the amount of time you have to finish the class. There are deadlines for whether or not you can get credit in certain semesters. For-example you would have to sign up for the class(s) by April 1st and finish the class by May 1st for it to count for their spring semester.
This mainly affects the date it will show up on your transcript. If you don't finish the class in May you will have to finish it in the following semester to receive credit. You would then have to wait until the regular college students semster ends to get those units to appear on you transcript. So depending on when you want to get the units sent to CBA you might have self made deadlines to avoid having to wait another semester for your grades to post in the colleges records.
For me I am trying to get the classes finished by May so I can hopefully get the transcripts sent in late May. Otherwise I will have to wait another few months for their summer classes to close to send them out. This would be another few months I would have to wait for my license.

StephAVMemberI'd double check with your State Board on the double counting of courses. In CA, as long as it is a different university/college then you are fine. I just started the first tax class. It took about a week for them to get my account online up and running with the correct course materials. I think the deadline is 4/1 for the spring semester, which ends in May. And if you don't get done by then, the summer session ends in late July. You can work through it at your own pace. I think all the classes might be made up of 4 tests, 8 quizzes and the homework (which is worth minimal points).

AnonymousInactiveIn my state (PA) you must have 24 accounting-related credits and 150 total credits in any subject and a bachelor's degree in any subject to sit the exam. So in PA at least, as long as you have 24 accounting-related credits, the remaining credits could be in basket weaving as long as you have a degree in it.
But to get CPA certification you need 12 more (36 total) credits in accounting-related credits and a year's experience.
OP stated that his classes will count for the 150 credits to sit the exam – but so will any credits. Big question is, are the classes sufficiently accounting-intensive to count as ‘accounting related'?

Study MonkMemberI have only taken AUD so far, but I found the class to be good.
The quizzes were true or false. This might sound easy, but they seemed to test on the odd topics that were not reflected in the multiple choice questions. The four exams consisted of 30 multiple choice questions that were much harder than the homework questions. I got a B in audit with a 82%, and scored a 91 on the actual audit exam.
I probably would of done better in the class if I took all of the exams on my last days of studying when my audit skills were the strongest. I think these classes could be done in less than 12 hours for people who have already established a strong foundation with their review courses. It appears you get the whole cpaexcel review course. The only downside is the navigating is annoying, because you have to click on specific lessons to access the specific cpaexcel components.
I definitely recommend these courses for people who want units, but don't want to spend any time on material that is not CPA related. Unfortunately I decided to go back to school anyway so one of the classes I paid for I didn't need. The audit and business law courses will count for the new ethic class requirements in California.

StephAVMemberI paid for the first taxation course. I've been debating how to proceed. I have Roger CPA Review course and I'm planning to do 4 of these classes (3 for REG and 1 for AUD). I've gone through all my tax review lectures from Roger. I haven't done many of the mcq in my review material and I started working on the course and it I feel pressured to really know the material. I think Study Monk is right about doing the course at the end when you already have a good knowledge base, then you can easily answer the questions or you are just more comfortable and knowledgeable. It's all online and you can use your notes and materials but the tests and quizes are all timed. Well, I haven't taken an actual exam yet. I took a quiz and it turned out I didn't realize what material it was covering… It is a little confusing, but now I have it down. Now that I got a 60% on my first quiz:-/ I feel a lot more pressure to answer the questions correctly than I do studying with the Wiley TB where the score doesn't REALLY matter.
I think I might concentrate back on my Roger Material and get through all of that and some of the mcq then do these more towards the end of my studies. I feel like the added pressure is good and I really do learn from getting questions correct or incorrect.
