    Alright, I’ve posted about this before in another thread but I’m just curious… I had a question in my FAR exam and now one in my BEC exam that I had in both the 1st and 2nd testlets… a bunch of people have said they were likely “similar” but when I say same, I mean same ABCD order of answers… same details… These questions have to be pretest right? I mean there’s no way they can let that slip by. If they do its kind of obnoxious.

    Alright so here's why I think they could be pretest… the AICPAs “grading” thingy tells us that question difficulty is determined by a few factors;

    “There are three statistics used to describe the questions: Difficulty – whether the
    question is generally easier or more difficult for candidates, Discrimination – how well the
    question differentiates between more able and less able candidates, and Guessing – the
    chances of candidates answering the question correctly just by guessing.

    They also state;

    “The statistics are generated when the questions are administered as pretest questions and used in the scoring when the questions are operational.”

    How better to determine if someone is guessing than by asking the same question twice.

    The testlets are generated individually, then selected at random. Each question is used in many testlets. Each test has a testlet picked after seeing performance on the 1st testlet. So, if you do well on your 1st testlet, then your 2nd testlet is picked from a group of possible “Hard” testlets. Because of this, I think the fact that question #11,789 is in testlet #1 and in testlet #2 doesn't really indicate anything, since both testlets were developed individually, and it was your score on testlet #1 as a whole that determined which testlet #2 you'd get, but it would be complicated for them to have only certain testlet #2's allowed that excluded all questions in testlet #1, and then only testlet #3's allowed that excluded all questions in #1 and in all possible #2's.

    Now, if you'd had 2 of the same question in the same testlet, then I'd think that was very weird, and would be more likely to think it was an indicator of a pre-test status. If this is a pre-test thing, then I'd think they'd have to put that same question in testlet #1 and #2 for all testlets to ensure that students got it twice in order to test the “guessing” potential.

    I guess that makes sense. I just don't see how that demonstrates anyones abilities if one question is worth 2/12-2/15ths of your score for a section, just because you dont know a single detail. And with everyone paying these exam fees, it should be possible to exclude questions already answered.
