This is a little off topic, but I think can be a little fun! Was being an accountant your top job pick? Was this what you wanted to do? Was accounting your passion?

Well for some obviously yes! However, for me, if I had the budget (loans or whatever would cover it) and an opportunity, I would drop everything to become an airline pilot or an air traffic controller. This would really get me out of the bed excited and it is something that I definitely feel passionate about.

Anyone else with a story like this? Don’t be shy let’s hear it!

BEC: 5/21/14 82! PASSED HALF WAY THERE!
    FAR: 4/2/15 80! Almost there!
    AUD: 69, 74, 4/3/14 81! PASSED
    REG: TBD

I remember a time when being a door to door Bible salesman or owning a Saturn dealership was as lucrative as being a CPA.

I was reminiscing w/ a past co-worker today. Earlier, I stated how accounting has been what I've wanted to do for as long as I can remember. Even though I know what I wanted to do, other jobs still interest me. My old co-worker and I were talking about how I had this list of different jobs I could do if I wanted to because I was a jack-of-all-trades.

I've always loved seeing the “behind the scenes” of different jobs. I love learning new things. I would love to go into different places, learn their job and get super awesome at it and just leave right afterwards haha.

    BEC - 80
    AUD - 64, 75 - credit lost, 90!!
    REG - 73, 74, 83
    FAR - 61, 72, 85

Feels good finishing on my best note. Time to watch the mailbox.

I wanted to be a computer programmer and make video games but never thought I was smart enough to do it but I wish I had. I hate accounting, I have a degree I'm not even an accountant in real life. I'd rather be on wellfare than work in a public accounting firm.

I'm also totally against capitalism and hate finance and business so that doesn't help either.

This is fairly relevant. Great advice from Mike Rowe.

Watch this … Maybe you will buy into it, i'm too much of a coward to follow my dreams…

Edit: in case you dont like what you do now, I think that the smart way to think about it is to have a plan to shift from what you do, into something that you love. Good luck

Passed And got my license too ..

They say you do the first career for the money and if you are good/lucky enough and are solid with your money you should be able to have a second career for the passion; later in life but before retirement where you don't need the money as much.

The way I see it, careers that are well paid fall into one of four categories:

They are dangerous (electrician), they require a huge degree of intelligence (actuary), involve a fair degree of pressure or responsibility (doctor/defence attorney), or require a huge degree of talent (pro sports, actors, singers). Outside of these categories…generally speaking the better pay the job has the more it's going to suck. This is simple economics; if doing a job that most people would really enjoy paid a huge amount of money…The market would saturate and the supply and demand tells us the pay would drop…probably about to where it is.

The really lucky ones are the few that are born with the intelligence, talent, love of danger or pressure….those are the ones who get to “never work a day in their life” as the old saying goes. For the rest of us…find something you are really good at and do it better than most for as long as you need to…then when money matters less go do what you love:)

^^Agree completely^^ I would love to work in a bar on a cruise ship, but I don't think they would let me bring my kids. 🙂 Accounting is for the money and stability. Fun jobs are for people that don't need the money or don't have a lot of responsibilities and can take the risk of instability.

CPA Exam - Finally DONE (November 2014)
    BEC (08/10/13) 80
    AUD (08/24/13) 65 (11/13/13) 85
    FAR (04/12/14) 81
    REG (07/19/14) 69 (11/29/14) 87!!

You all have some pretty sad dream jobs… I wanted to play in the NFL until I stopped growing in high school. I would've settled for the MLB but I knew I didn't have the arm for it.

At this point my dream job would be something that involves the outdoors/hunting and accounting. Do some accounting one day, help out with woodduck nesting boxes the next. Go for a morning hunt, finish out the day at the office (getting paid for both).

KBin: I can't speak for everybody but I took it to mean adult dream jobs. So when you grow up and realize you aren't one of the special few meant for pro sports…then what do you want to do?

Interestingly I saw a job recently…think it was in FP&A or something for a climbing company and being an outdoor enthusiast was actually a requirement of the job. Seemed like a pretty badass job…flexible schedule to allow you to pursue your outdoor passions and all that. So don't give up because there are jobs that would fit your dream job. Just have to find it
