Does your firm allow you to study when you have no work?

As you can see its 4/15 and I’m on here instead of preparing returns, because We’re Done! That said, other than a few notices to answer, I have no work. I need to study BEC for a May 2nd exam. Problem is, my supervisor doesn’t want me to study during this time, because I have my Becker textbook out and anyone walking past my office will see that I’m studying instead of working, bottomline its about appearances “appearing to work rather than actually having work”, am I the only one going through this at work? Note all other Accountants in the department are much older and already have CPA licenses already, so why should they care about my work/study time? Am I wrong for wanting to be able to study when I have nothign to do?

I'm not at a firm, as I work in industry, but my boss doesn't have a problem with it. My first month on the job, I passed REG only because I was able to study so much on the job. I'm very fortunate in that aspect. I would follow the advice about the online MCQs. That would be my play.

When I was at Big 4 some people didnt care and others did. I always did it discretely. I would work MCQs and keep a notepad that I would do calcs on.

    AUD - 73, 72 retake 7/2/2016
    BEC - 8/20/2016

I am so ready for this nightmare to be over. Been at this way too long.

Problem is i'm still reviewing the material/ taking notes. So now instead of having the textbook out I'm playing the online lectures and just taking notes from those, no textbook out now! I understand being discrete, etc. I just don't understand the logic of my manager, I'm studying to better myself, which makes me a greater asset to the firm, etc. Just seeing if anyone else had the same problem. Thank you all for your feedback.

Mine doesn't care as long as you're up to date on work. One week when it was dead I must have studied for 15 hours during business hours.

    BEC - 80 (Becker)
    AUD - 92 (Becker+NINJA MCQ)
    FAR - 87 (Becker+NINJA MCQ)
    REG - 90 (Becker+NINJA MCQ and Audio)

Can't you go into a conference room or something? I also study at my desk and on my computer but I just shrink my screen/ windows most of the time if I want to practice MCQs. I will also open up a PDF version of my NINJA notes, word doc of notes or text and study that way. I also bought the Roger MCQ app for my phone so I practice with those when I can't use NINJA. I also listen to NINJA audio at work…not everything sinks in but at least it's another way to get in more study time. πŸ™‚

    FAR - (11/01/14) 71 (02/07/15) 79

    REG - (11/30/15) 55 (05/19/16) 74

I would advise against it unless explicitly told that you can study during work hours. Just because the firm wants you to become a CPA, doesn't mean they want to pay you to study for it. You were hired for a specific function, and even though you'll be more of as asset when you are certified, they want value-added work in the short-term, too. The best you can do is multi-task and use your free time wisely – listen to Ninja Audio while you work on more mundane tasks, study on lunch breaks, etc.

I do remember that when I was at Big 4 it all depended on the seniors/managers I was working with. Some would be totally rude if they found you studying and others would not care. And it would always end up with getting meaningless tasks.

I would ask if there was any work that needed to get done, so I had my bases covered. However, there were times they looked at utilization and Managers and directors needed to make sure we all busy. The whole looking busy is everywhere. I did 5 to 10 questions at a time during the course of a day. You cant really expect them to want you to study when they are paying you to work. It's great for them but some people do not see it that way.

Ninja MCQs are great. Sneak in 10 questions whenever you get a chance. You just limit it to the material that you have studied.

I'm in industry and my boss doesn't care, but I can't do it. Every time he walks in and I'm going through a lecture I feel guilty. So I just try the MCQs to accommodate.

    BEC - 83 7/25
    REG - 76 5/2/15
AUD - Hopefully before MY Audit...7/5?
    FAR - 83 5/2/16

I'm in industry and by manager told me she doesn't mind, so I take full advantage of it!
