Does anyone pay for a LinkedIn premium subscription? Is it worth it? I am job hunting and I have several anonymous viewers of my profile that I would love to identify.

I was wondering about this too. I went to a few recruiting seminars and the messages that I kept hearing over and over is to use social media to your advantage. LinkedIn was mentioned a few times by a few different recruiters. I wonder if anyone had any success with LinkedIn.

I wondered the same thing about contacting Big 4 firms through LinkedIn. I use it to connect with co-workers and colleagues, but that's about it. In real life, when I have had contact with partners or managers in potential firms, they have told me they will forward my resume to the person hiring, but I hear nothing else. All dead ends.

Personally, I feel very uncomfortable essentially “cold-calling” someone I don't know on LinkedIn about my resume and trying to connect with movers and shakers I've never met. Just seems awkward to me… It reminds me a lot of the first couple weeks when I was a freshman in college, and I was getting random friend requests from people I had never met before, just because we went to the same university. I was just like “Who are you?” and “Why would I accept your request?” Maybe I just don't “get” LinkedIn, but I use it primarily as an online resume. If someone is interested in me, they can send me a message. Otherwise, I will just use my face-to-face networks to look for job opportunities. I feel much more comfortable going to my university's career fair as an alumni and approaching a recruiter or manager. Just a personal preference, though.

I think recruiters and hiring managers use LinkedIn to check out the social aspect of applicants. Things that a resume will not tell you. Do they have a purple mohawk or look anti-social? Mark that one off the list. Do they have a bunch of normal looking connections and know how to present themselves online? Contact them.
