Do you put additional designations after your name? - Page 2

If you are already a CPA, would you put additional designations and certificates that you receive after your name, or is that considered tacky? Such as CMA, CFE, CIA, CGMA? If you do, when does it stop?

Would you put it on a business card?

Would you put it in your resume?

Would you put it on your email signature?

I tend to lean towards going without unless there is some real necessity in it. You see these LinkedIn profiles with John Doe, MS, MBA, CPA, CMA, CIA, LMNOP, ok, really?!

I just feel like with how freely information is, if someone is actually interested in your creds they'll look them up on LinkedIn. So skip the John Doe, LMNOP and create a LinkedIn profile, this way people can see whacha got and you don't look pretentious.

That said, choosing 1 isnt so bad, and in that case I lean more towards the cert (CPA) than the degree.

Only include relevant professional designations (CPA, CFP, etc). I would leave off MBAs or other degrees. I think this is pretty standard etiquette.

Even though I'm the company controller (a CPA, CFE and am studying for the CMA), for whatever reason I'm often introduced as the “secretary” or “office manager”. Everyone in the office KNOWS what I do and has confidence in my abilities, but I think I'm the first true controller and secretary/office manager has rolled off their tongues for years so continues to do so.

I think most people don't know what EA stands for and for many CPA is equivalent to tax proficiency. Which of course is not always the case but that's how majority of people thinks…. “I need a CPA to do my taxes”….

If according to you EA = tax proficiency, then what does CPA indicate??

I think CPA is generally more recognized, but studying for the EA actually gives you more specialized knowledge, so if anything, going for it is good for the actual education. I don't know how much value it would have having in addition to your CPA.

I might be mistaken but I think one benefit is that the EA allows you to sign off on tax returns in any state and represent your client to the IRS in any state like an attorney, as opposed to the CPA where you are limited to the state you are licensed in.
