    Hey guys!

So I graduated with my BBA with 135 credits and now I’m sitting for the CPA. I got an email from Becker saying I can actually get credit for doing online CPA Prep courses through DeVry/Keller.

I’m taking 2 of the classes (FAR and BEC) online and that’s a total of 5 credits for around $2,900 total.

My question is: Is DeVry worth it to get those credits? Also, more importantly, has anyone taken these prep courses and do they help with the CPA studying? That’s the most important part I am worried about. If it helps, I’m willing to pay the money.

    Thanks!!!

I'm not sure what they mean by that, I'm a Keller/Devry student, and I can tell you, the Becker prep classes do not count as credit, maybe what they mean is, you can take other accounting classes.

Also Devry/Keller owns Becker, something that most people aren't aware of, so they are probably just trying to get more business from you…just call them and get more clarification….

You can try the Unviersity of North Alabama's Professional Accounting Prep Course. They offer eight upper level 3 credit courses for $475 each (7 accounting and 1 business law)

I did my Master's through Devry and the Becker courses did count towards credit.

Well what they said was I can earn credits towards a graduate degree at Keller. Although I am enrolled at a different university for my masters in tax, I won't be finishing my degree at Keller. So I will only take those two prep courses for a total of 5 credits and the state board of accountancy here in Michigan said they accept credits from any accredited university. I just want to get to my 150.

More importantly, for those of you who have taken the CPA prep courses through Keller, were they helpful? Did it help you pass?

    Thanks!

The prep course through Devry is basically the Becker class for REG. If you can take your credits elsewhere I would highly recommend it because its overpriced unless someone else is paying for your tuition. Unless you are ready to take those exams its pointless to take the classes and not sit for the exams.

I am taking Becker through Keller. The classes count towards your degree and will count towards credit with your state's CPA requirements.

is it worth it? Depends on your needs. Do you want to take Becker for your prep? If yes then it may be worth it because you will get 9 semester units out of the deal. If you want it to add to your resume as some selling point, probably not worth it. Truthfully, Devry/Keller hasn't hurt me in anyway as far as getting interviews, most time the recruiters haven't heard of Keller… So it is very neutral. You aren't going to get the accolades you would get with better schools.

I do not believe that taking Becker with Devry is better than taking Becker on its own. I have struggled with the time constraints. Once you finish one class you have to turn in your work by a certain amount of time and then shortly after the next class starts. I would have liked to take it separately if it wasn't for my MSAC.

You need both — you need Becker and you need the 9 credits. Two birds with one stone. Although….they wont let you take the test unless you have acctg credits. That sucks b/c by the time I took the test, I forgot what I learned, so had to relearn it.

    akcpa,

I have been working on the exam a while now and almost complete.. If I were in your position and considering an option for additional credits I would look into the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign Certificate program. From what I understand the provide Credits for anywhere from 4-16.

Thank you guys for all your help it means a lot!

A little more information: I have Becker and I'm using Becker to study for my CPA- my concern was if DeVry/Keller prep courses helped me learn more than just using Becker on its own. As for the credits, yes I may just use another online university from one of the ones you guys mentioned, but I just want all the help I can get to pass these crazy exams so if DeVry helps, I want to do it.

    What do you guys think?

The devry class is the Becker class. When I took it They had an instructor who played the Becker lecture DVD and stuck around around to stamp out books to show attendance. He didn't go over any homework questions. For the online class it will be the Same as the Becker self study but the difference is if the class runs for 7 weeks you have to watch all lectures and get all the homework done in those 7 weeks. I think they give you an extra 2 weeks to submit everything to get credit for the class. Basically you are paying for the course you already have since you are studying with Becker already. It's not an extra class that helps you prep for the CPA.

I graduated from Keller, and those Becker classes do count towards your degree. The classes are actually provided by Becker (Devry is the owner of Becker) in the same format that Becker uses. Before I started my masters, I had many doubts about Keller, but I have been very impressed when going to interviews. Many employers seem to like the fact that I graduated from Keller. People don't even look at my bachelor (I got my bachelor from a very prestige university). It's expensive, but worth it.

Since the OP already has Becker it makes no sense for him to pay $2900 to get Becker again just to get the credits he/she needs to sit for the exam. If credits are what you need it's cost effective to go with another school.

If you have Becker already, don't do it.

No, DeVry/Keller adds nothing to the Becker program. You have to turn in the Becker performance report and take quizzes to get credit. The quizzes are taken directly from the Becker homework questions.
