Credit Card Theft

Someone got my credit card information…again. Apparently, someone bought an airline ticket under my name. I mean, something like this just happened 3 months ago. I’ve only been using my credit card at gas stations, grocery stores, and occasionally online. I’ve figured it’s best to not use it online from now on, but without figuring out how this information keeps leaking then it’s hard to fix the issue. Comments, suggestions?

If I were an identity thief – an airline ticket wouldn't be first on my list of things to purchase.

Your card is safer online than at a gas station. I've had my card number jacked twice after gas station purchases. The skimmers are inside the pump so you can't even see them.

The best thing you can do is to have a credit card company that has good protections.

As long as you use the trustworthy sites to shop (e.g. Amazon, popular retailers, etc.) I think you should be okay but also, try to make sure you report the fraudulent activity in a timely manner to your credit companies, then you should be more than fine.

BofA & Chase have been great in terms of detecting fraudulent activity on my account before even me knowing about it. So try to monitor your card activity online frequently.

I shop online all the time with no issues. The only time someone used my card online was shortly after I purchased something online from some unknown website (I really needed the yard sign).

So, I'd say major online websites are ok.

As someone suggested above, maybe the gas station is an issue? I usually use Chevron or Shell and had no problems.

So, from the consensus what I'm getting is that swiping the credit card at the gas pump can get the information stolen? Would it be safer to swipe it inside the store, or should I just resort to some other method?

I once had someone spend $8 at Trump Hotel in NYC and then go on a $500 shopping spree at a Target in NY. Thankfully, BoA realized it before I even did and immediately canceled the charges. I barely had to do anything.

(Unrelated to the above, since that happened years ago- ) I always go to a gas station near my apartment that pumps for me, and I'm so nervous that they'll steal my credit card info while they have my credit card. But I'm too lazy to drive anywhere else for gas… so, I guess that's my own fault.

    F - *76*(08/'13)-Becker & NINJA - "server upgrade" survivor
    B - 60('11); *82*(10/'13) -Becker & NINA

    DONE, DONE, AND DONE.

This is what I heard is the biggest problem: https://abcnews.go.com/US/breed-credit-card-thieves-target-gas-pumps/story?id=20100210

    BEC: 73, 81
    AUD: 85
    FAR: 71, 77
    REG: 74, 75...finally DONE! 😀

*This is my 2nd attempt at the CPA exam. For all of you who have failed this exam many times, given up on it, or taken a break like me, remember that it is still possible to finish what you started...failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently 🙂

    @Amay

Thanks for the heads up. I have suspected that might be a possible explanation. Pay at the pump station: risk of getting the card skimmed. Pay inside the store: risk of the cashier getting your card information. Sheesh, as if getting gas isn't aleady troublesome…
