Just curious how much you remember from the exam (all areas) and how often you get to apply the complex stuff in practice. I feel like I am going to be one of those dumb CPA’s when it’s all said and done since I won’t get a chance to use it.

I think someone earlier already said it, but nobody will practice all aspects of what is covered on the exam. You'll specialize in one area or another. Also if you go into public practice, chances are you won't be immediately going to work for yourself. You will more than likely work with many knowledgeable people with more experience than yourself, who will handle the more complex issues. That being said, when I was studying, I would ask many of the CPAs I worked with for help on topics I was struggling with. Most couldn't give me much help.

My predicted scores if I walked into any of the 4 exams today:

    REG – 78

    FAR – 64

    AUD – 62

    BEC – 75

I work in tax, so I think I could squeak out a passing score in REG and I think I could manage to figure out enough BEC stuff. I'd definitely fail the other two.

    REG - 89
    FAR - 84
    AUD - 73, 86
    BEC - 89

REG, AUD, and FAR topics I use regularly. I have my note binders on all of them at my desk and can easily flip to them and look at an example of how to do a complex calculation for C-corp's, or remember a simple rule for audit that I forgot.

    I am in public accounting.

I have forgotten BEC almost entirely to my delight!

    AUD - Jan 9,13 Pass
    REG - Aug 30,13 Pass
    BEC - Oct 26,13 Pass
    FAR - Dec 4,13 Pass

I'm in private and don't use the details of what I learned, but I think the broader concepts are still useful. Like, we're going through audit (hopefully about done… 😐 ) and understanding the basics of audit helps me to understand what the auditors are selecting and why, and have some insight into what they're looking for. We're not currently a public company but have been in the past and may be in the future, so we try to still remain fully compliant…so all the information from FAR is useful because even if I don't apply much or any of it on a day-to-day basis, it's still helpful to understand the “big picture”. REG is probably the least useful for me now that I'm in private, but BEC even has concepts about business as a whole that are still useful.

However, the day-to-day operations comes almost entirely from on-the-job experience!
