Trying to decide what direction to take in life.

Which is better: The CPA or becoming a Notary public?

I’m leaning towards the CPA because it takes less time to write.

    Thoughts?

    Do both.

There is next to no analytical work involved with being a Notary. Essentially, you sign-off on who someone is (eg check ID). Unless you are an attorney in good standing you cannot give legal advice.

A CPA on the other hand is analytical. You are a professional that people look to for advice.

If you think the notary exam (in the states that actually require one, some states like MA you only submit an application and a fee to become one) takes longer to write than the CPA exam, Notary is absolutely the better path for you.

I think you can legally charge two WHOLE dollars each time you notarize something so its a great option if you notarize 50,000 documents a year.

I think being a notary is much tougher, go for the CPA! 😛

Be an MD. Only two letters, pretty sweet deal.

    Thanks @El.

I considered becoming a medical doctor. But two issues: 1) is that I don't really care about people, and 2) It seems I would often be required to write both “Dr.” AND “M.D.” so that's not really an option.

Just become really famous, then you just have to use one name. Like Dr. Phil or Dr. Madonna M.D.

I would personally recommend the often ignored career path of over-the-road trucker/CPA/Notary Public.

Over-the-road truckers are notoriously bad records keepers and often have legal issues requiring documents to be signed in the presence of a notary.

Then you could do their tax returns while waiting for your next load.

    Good luck!
