Ok fellow Ninjas, I have a question for you. If someone told you that they had taken the CPA exam and passed all four parts, but decided not to go forward and get their actual certificate/license because they didn’t want to bother with having to deal with the annual CPE requirements, what would you think? When I asked why they didn’t consider this before taking the exam, the answer was that it was more about “having fun studying with my study group.”

    Truth or BS???

    pikachu,

You should sit for the State of MA Non Reporting License if you don't think you will work directly under a CPA. You can become a fully licensed CPA based on your undergraduate and graduate degree.

In regards to CPE, it's mostly 80 hours every 2 years for most states and you can do it 100% online with many of the unlimited CPE hour providers. You will pay anywhere from $150 – $500 for a 12 month subscription depending on the provider for unlimited amount of CPE available hours. This avoids you having to attend conferences, travel, etc. to complete CPE.

Despite passing a section of the exam, I haven't been able to find a job in public accounting, so it kind of feels like I am doing this for fun. 🙁

    Passed all sections.

Sorry, but anyone who goes through all of this just to say “I've done it”, shows me that the person isn't as smart as all of the letters behind their name indicate. Self accomplishment can be gained in so many ways, without wasting hard earned money on a certificate that will never be utilized. If I spend any money on career-related/education endeavors, it will be something I plan to utilize.

Two points, the non reporting license is an option with a graduate degree but does not make a person “fully licensed” (I say this as a person with a non reporting license) because you may NOT provide any attest services.

Other point-I can totally see passing the exams as a personal achievement but to say it was “fun with friends” is just silly. Makes it sound like you chose between that and doing jello shots at Coyote Ugly 😉

Agreed. A girl is what got me into accounting when I was a young, ambitious, college kid. And now I'm in it for the love of the GAAP

I intend on going back for a computer science degree….FOR FUN. I don't know that i'd ever use it, except for maybe hobby. But some people like learning things.

Reading or taking up a hobby will accomplish the same goal. I don't plan to spend thousands just in the name of “personal achievement”. Guess everyone is different.

I'm calling BS. Sounds like the type of person who wants to gloat and brag about how they passed something, when the other people have not passed yet.

The annual CPE requirements pale in comparison to the time/effort spent passing the actual exam. Most of us could sleep walk thru the CPE requirements; however, the exam is a beast to pass. Saying he doesn't want to bother with the annual CPE requirements is silly after the hard work put in to pass the exam.

Plus, why not just get the actual license and then just not continue the CPE requirement; thus, letting your status become inactive?

    It's possible. For a loser.

I used to guard with a guy from southern Florida. A group of his law school cohorts were bored, rich 60 year old ladies who would get degrees for fun. He told me that they were loathed on campus, because a lot of the courses were graded on a bell curve and that group of them (there were approximately 10), would take the same courses, get pie in the sky grades and break the bell curve with no intention of ever using the law degree. That's actually kind of messed up if you think about it. The legal profession is a lot like accounting in that in the beginning, all you have are your grades and the recruiters look for that.

    MLA,

The State of MA Non Reporting License is a full and actual CPA License, you just have certain restrictions that are outlined by the Board on the types of services you can't perform. However, you are marketed as, and seen as….a fully licensed CPA and you do not have to disclose to the public anything about a “non-reporting” status.

It's important to make this clear as some states I believe still give out “CPA Certificates” which aren't licenses. The State of MA's Non Reporting function is a License. If you are working within an area where you want to perform some of the services that are restricted, all you have to do is meet the additional requirements and the restrictions are lifted.
