    Hey all,
Been lurking for awhile but made this account because of something that came up. Earlier on in the summer I was arrested for a DUI. No need to get into it, made a dumb mistake while at dinner with friends. Learned my lesson, won’t happen again. I am set to start working at a B4 in October. While my criminal court date (which I am confident will not end in a conviction) is in a couple weeks but I just found out that my court date for the MVA to settle this side of things is on the morning of the first Friday of my first week at B4. I fully expect the MVA to allow me to drive to and from work as a result of this hearing, but if I do not attend I’m sure I will be fully suspended. I am in a smaller office for what it’s worth. My lawyer said starting a new job is not a basis for postponement. Who do I even go to or how do I frame this to someone in HR? Is this going to cause major problems? I only expect to be gone a couple hours at the most.

Your lawyer can't handle this for you? That would be my first option.
Second option would be to just tell your manager that you have a pre-existing appointment on Friday morning.

Agreed with @Recked, there is no need to disclose anything to your job.

I would say that you shouldn't need to tell HR why you need to be gone – just let them know, well in advance, that you have a pre-existing appointment that cannot be rescheduled. Ask if you can work extra hours during the other days that week or pay period to make up for it since you probably won't have PTO accrued yet.

In times such as these, why DUI when you can Uber or Lyft?
