    Hey Ninjas!

Currently working for an insurance company in south Florida, small about 1.5M a Year in gross revenue. ( about 300-500k in net profit a year). Been there 3 years. Graduated from my bachelors and started there, did my masters while there and just got my CPA in August.

started at 36k a year and now at 56k ( after getting my CPA). I basically do everything for the company accounting wise since it’s not necessary for me to hire anyone beneath me yet, but once we grow ( which we are about 25-40% each year) I will be the CFO.

My question is, I know I’m underpaid, but by how much? Raises are being announced this Thursday coming up so I want to have a good number – nothing too ridiculous. If anyone has similar qualifications what do you make if you live in south Florida? My husband makes 60 and only has a bachelors degree but he is in the banking sector, but it’s kind of ridiculous that I make less than what some make without my qualifications.

I usually get calls from recruiters but have not made a move yet due to the fact that I love working there and the hours are great plus the potential to be the cfo once we get to that level in the next few years.

Kind of just want to see what I’m worth so I don’t go asking for a ridiculous number.

Thanks in advance for your input!

I don't know about the insurance business or FL wages, but in Texas at a CPA firm (not a major city) I make $60k now and expect a raise to about $75 once I get my CPA. This is a firm that requires little overtime,is very flexible on schedules, 3% 401K match, but no healthcare.

Your best bet is to study similar jobs in your area. I could tell you that what you're doing is easily worth 80k north of Boston, but, that's not relevant in s. Florida. Unfortunately as you've figured out the credentials don't determine your worth to an employer, the market does.

you both make great and valid points, what type of experience do you have? I'm only 26 so I've also only been in the field for about 5 years at the max. Been doing full cycle accounting for 3 Years though.

I wouldn't expect any more than 10%. They are only grossing 1.5 million in sales. What accounting functions are they outsourcing?

I know we all want to make good money but work life/balance is sooo important and you don't realize that until you're making more money at a place you hate. I would totally go back to my last job where I was making 10% less because the hours were better. Just a thought… wish someone would've reminded me of that but sometimes the best lessons are the ones you learn the hard way :-/

I totally agree! With you jm, it's the reason I'm still here. Worried about ending up at a place where I work like 80 hours a week.

Ejoern the only outsourcing is when we do our taxes. We do business in several states so we have a CPA do them for us.
