Hey all, I”m a long time user of this site but finally decided to create an account as I am trying to plan out my next career decision.

    A little background:

Graduated May 2014 with 150 credits

I’ve worked in the tax department of a large private company since January 2014

I should have my CPA within 2-3 months (taking my last test next week)

The issue I am having is I cannot see myself staying at my current employer much longer. The hours are great (40 hours a week year round) and the pay is decent but I am bored out of my mind half the time. The worst part is I don’t really fit in with the people I work with. They are all very introverted and some are even scared to leave their cubicles! I love interacting and joking around with people so I just don’t feel like this place is the right fit.

My main goal is to find a place that I can use my knowledge but yet have a more fulfilling working environment (interaction with clients/co-workers) as well as more fast paced. Where I am I talk to fellow co-workers maybe 10 minutes in an 8 hour day and I am ready to freak out! Nobody gets out of their desk it seems for fear of someone thinking they don’t have work to do.

My question for you all is: is this normal in tax or accounting in general everywhere? I know I could jump into public and it would be a lot more engaging but am I going to find it lacking human interaction as well? My dream job would be to be working with people at least half the day. I’ve also contemplated going back for my masters and see about teaching full time. I don’t have kids or a wife so the time/money would be a non-issue. I’ve also considers going back for an MBA and see about some sort of management role. My favorite job in my life was McDonalds (crazy huh?) due to the constant change, fast paced environment, and getting to meet so many random people every day.

Am I screwed? Is there a path in accounting that would get me what I’m looking for? or is this one of those suck it up type of scenarios? btw i’m 27..

Thanks ahead of time for any suggestions/advice!!!

It sounds like you would enjoy some type of consulting position, but those usually require a lot of experience and I'm not sure if you're there yet or not. There's also plenty of opportunities in Sales that would pay an awful lot more than a McDonald's job but still get you out there into the fray.

If you went back for your MBA with a CPA, you could easily land a management role, which would keep you pretty connected with your peers/subordinates.
