Does it have to have an active CPA to sign off on the work experience? I am working in private industry and the CPA I am working with has an inactive status. I am not sure if he can sign off on my work experience?

It needs to be active, this is why I had to leave industry and got a “staff” job at a CPA firms so that they can sign me off. I'll be here only until I get my license , then back to industry.

PEGGY, I just got my experience signed by my supervisor. I work in private industry. First signer should be active CPA. Second signer (who is above first signer unless first signer is owner) doesn't have to be CPA. When I joined my company, there was no active CPA. But when I finished my exams, active CPA joined and he became my supervisor. I got so lucky. There are definitely active CPAs in private industry, but I know it is not easy to find them unless you work for a big company.

This is such a bummer. I've been in the industry for a few years already.

You're super lucky! I wish I can be like you! We do have a few CPAs in our company, but all of them are inactive. I guess it's not necessary for them to keep their CPA license active in the industry. If I pass all parts of my exam, I still need to get a job in plublic accounting industry and have to work at least a year to have an active CPA to sign off on my experience. Such a long process:(

It depends on the state. In some states it doesn't have to be your supervisor. Any CPA can sign off for you.

In my state (NY), they are really picky. The CPA that signs off has to be licensed in New York. If they are licensed in another state….no can do.

Have you passed any exams? It may take two years (like me) to pass them all. You have time to look around.

Don't forget other companies in industry have CPA's. At my company everyone has to keep theirs active. And a few of my friends got government jobs where they will sign for them. So it's not just firms.
